Thumbs down Spanking pets?!?!?!

Ok, at first, I didn't think this was a debate. I am a member of several forums and posted about this issue. Yesterday, I read a blog of a girl that is supposedly an animal lover and allows her husband to spank her 10 month old yorkie for dumping over the trash in the kitchen, when, IMO, the dog should've been watched in the first place. For God sakes, she's still a puppy!!!. I figured most true animal lovers would agree, but apparently, there are ALOT of people who think its perfectly fine to hit a dog ..your thoughts on this???

old school..... it was how dogs were trained in the past.... that along with hitting with newspapers and rubbing their nose in it.....

thankfully we know more about training now..... but there are alot of folks who are getting bad old school advice (or don't have a whole lot of brain cells)

I never, ever feel there are any good reasons for hitting a dog - Ever! - All it teaches the dog is to fear us/hands and it doesn't teach him that what he just did was inappropriate.

Would it be okay to spank your kids but not your dog? I think spanking in general is no good, period. But it is an accepted method of punishment for children, usually for only last resort punishment, but we all know there are people who spank (pets and children) for things which are clearly undeserving.

When you spank a child (old enough to comprehend what the spanking is for) they understand it is correction. Do the same to a dog, more than likely, will learn, not correction, but fear. The blog I read said "Chloe got another spanking.." as part of the first sentence which tells me that this happens regularly for this poor dog. That she is not being corrected. Also, the guy had to chase the dog down to even spank her. She knew what was coming. It just saddens me.

It's abuse. "Spanking" is just 'hitting' with a softer title. It doesn't solve any problems, doesn't teach the dog anything and just allows people vent their anger on the animal.
As far as I'm concerned, it's wrong and in extreme cases (like this yorkie getting hit on a regular basis) should be reported. Animals shouldn't have to live in that kind of situation.

Cass.

Oh my gosh, I think I would have blown up at that owner for spanking her dog. It makes my stomach sick.
That poor dog, trying to run away and the stupid boyfriend catching it and spanking it. barf!!!
I admit I will tap Jasmine on the rear in class sometimes to get her attention, but it is not a hit or a spank, more of a tap on her huge, strong, rear to get her to listen that I am telling her to sit. If I actually hit her, I bet I would get bitten.

However, hitting a dog for tipping over the trash is not going to train the dog not to tip over the trash. By the time the BF caught the dog I am sure it had already forgotten it tipped over the trash. Then it wondered why he hit it again, and then it will try to stay away from him, and then it will be scared of arms and hands and may turn into a fear biter.

I hope you are going to post on that girls thread and tell her to stop hitting her dog and stop her boyfriend from doing it too. Nothing good will come of it.

I think she feels like he has a right to hit the dog because he bought it for her for Valentines Day last year. Could I post the exact quote from her blog? Or would that not be right..?

OK I just reread her blog and I noticed some "lol"s in there. So maybe she thought the whole thing was funny to her. At first I thought there was remorse, but maybe not. Am I allowed to post what she wrote?

You can't even spank a kid anymore like they did years ago without the child yelling abuse or having DSS coming over to visit your house. So hitting a dog is just plain stupid to me ! I called the MSPCA about two years ago on a man who was beating his daughters dog infront of small children in the driveway of his house he got fined and the daughter found her dog a new home away from the father. I would of liked to of taken a few punches at him

Here's an exact quote from her blog:

"Poor Chloe got a spanking again last night. She was laying on the couch by me.. when she turned around and I noticed she had a piece of bread in her mouth.. so being lazy like I am.. cuz I was watching tv.. I told Brad to come in there, when he saw it he started yelling at her and she ran behind the recliner.. so he went to throw it away.. when she saw the coast was clear, she ran and jumped on me for protection and stared toward the kitchen (she knew she was about to be in more trouble). Apparently, there was trash all over the kitchen lol so when he came back, he grabbed her and gave her spankings."
