Showing CLONED dogs?!
I may be going crazy, but I clearly remember reading an article saying the AKC is considering registering cloned dogs, along with letting them compete in conformation. The whole idea and the fact the AKC would even consider that is confusing; I thought the purpose of showing dogs was to evaluate BREEDING stock, not cloning stock, but correct me if I'm wrong? I also think before you spend $40,000 or more to get a carbon copy of Poopsy, you could give a pound puppy a chance. And, even if you did clone a dog, wouldn't its personality be different still?

I would think you would have a Dr. Jekyl & Mr. Hyde type dog Meaning the personality he did have will be better then the cloned dog. Watch out CUJO!
Just kidding LOL! Seriously.... that whole idea of showing a cloned dog does scare me and I think it is ridiculous! |

I think it's ridiculous too. I don't show dogs, but can't see why the AKC (or ANKC, CKC, British KC etc) would allow these dogs to be shown. Registered, perhaps...they are still members of their breeds after all, but shown in conformation? No way.
What's the point of that? I really think people are deluded if they think cloning their pet will allow the pet to effectively live forever. As has already been said...the clone is not the same animal. It just looks the same. Cass. |

First, there has been NO successfully cloned dog. SNUppy is fake. He is not a cloned Afghan Hound and the Korean veterinarian who claimed to have cloned him presented a false article that had several inconsistencies and the method by which he claimed to have produced the puppy was rather....unbelievable. The method that he claimed to have used was very mundane and there are an innumerable amount of scientists who had their doubts about the authenticity of SNUppy since the day he claimed to have been cloned. That said, the Korean veterinarian is not speaking to the public, and now we are back at Square 1. Dogs are extremely difficult to clone and I highly doubt the AKC would even consider allowing cloned animals to perform in conformation. I'm almost 100% sure this is a hoax. Where did you find this article and may we have the link?

Yes, I know now SNUppy is fake, but at the time I came across this article, no one knew for sure if SNUppy was legit. I found the article on a digest that I get e-mailed to me, and since they send about 2 e-mails a day, I'll have to look through old e-mails to find it. Whenever I do, I'll give you the link.

I'm with Greenleaf on this one. I can't imagine them letting cloned dogs compete in conformation - it rather subverts the purpose of breeding dogs, doesn't it?

It's actually very difficult to clone a dog, much more so than cloning a cat, interestingly enough. Dogs have a particular protein in their cells that if it's not present when the cell divides will result in mutations. Cloning them is difficult because the protein also has to be reproduced, not just the DNA. A little off topic, but I thought it was interesting.

well personally the money to clone a dog would be better spent on the darlings that are already alive and in need of loving care.
Cloning in my opinion is a disgusting waste of money. Also seems indecent to life as we know it. I havnt really heard any great success story yet more like science fiction ![]() |
