Many breeds being bred too big!!
What's up with so many breeds being bred much bigger than the standard these days?
It seems like every Lab I see these days is over 100# (and not necessarily fat). I used to work with someone who had a 120# Doberman! If you want a Dane or a Mastiff, then just get one ![]() |

I don't know either....Everybody either wants a really HUGE, scary looking dog, or a really small cute looking one.....I don't get it....I prefer medium size dogs myself....

yep, there are a lot of 90+lb boxers walking around too!
(I'm tired of people seeing my 51.3lb boxer (females: 50-65lbs) and them saying "wow, she's small... for a boxer!) And then I have to say "no.... she's right where she's supposed to be... for a boxer. But wow, your 50lb chihuahua is huge!" (just kidding on the last part) |

The thing that bothers me most about this wether they br bred too big or too small is that the national clubs are the ones that set the breed "standard" and many seem to change this at a whim depending on what seems to be most popular for any given time.
Many breeders also seem to breed for a particular "look" that the judges seem to like rather than sticking to the set standard. It seems to me that the standards are there for a reason and if judges were more apt to adhere to the standard that their supposedly supposed to base their judging on we wouldn't have breeders attempting to "improve" on the standard. Wether someone shows or not if the set standard became more the accepted belief, the national clubs didn't continue to change of a whim it would all have a trickle down effect. Just my opinion ![]() |

I worry about hip displasia. My dobie is about 85 lbs which is at the higher end of the standard. I can't imagine thinking he needs to be bigger to look intimidating. He's a big goofball, but sometimes people will cross the street so they won't have to walk past him

I have a problem with people breeding away from the standard and going super HUGE and/or super small. The problem I have is that some breeders don't test their dogs hips. This wreaks havoc on a large breed dog whose parents were not tested and if the breed is susceptible to HD. I just don't see the point in breeding for a huge or tiny tiny dog. If you want a big dog, then adopt one or look at bigger breeds.

GOOCH - You have the most beautiful dod I think I have ever seen! I don't know anything about dobermans (and you always hear the negative/bad stuff on the news) but what are they really like around kids? Are they a breed that 'anyone' can own? I have an 11 y/o and a 3 y/o and am looking to get a new addition to the family(pup). Should a doberman even be something I'm considering? I'll admit, I'm a sucker for pretty dogs and it's the looks I go for first when choosing a dog to get (meaning that i pick a breed and try to find the best temperament).
Dobies just have that cool look to them. Do they like to be inside? Do they sleep in the bed with you? Are they really bred to be fighters? Please don't take offense to that - it's just that I see your dog and yearn...lol. I'd love to have one -but don't know if I should. |

Dinkydog,
Thank you. Dobermans are not viscious unless they are trained that way (just like any dog) . Blitz is a very gentle and affectionate dog. Dobermans are very intelligent and are quite good at knowing when protective behavior is appropriate and when it is not. They have been called "velcro dogs" because they like to follow you everywhere and be near you. I have a 2 month old son and he is great with him. That being said, a Dobie is not for everyone; they are not couch potatoes! They are very high energy and need lots of exercise. Even walks on a leash are not usually good enough, you need a safe area where they can run and burn off some energy or they will be unhappy and most likely drive you nuts! I take him hiking or go to fenced in parks early in the morning when noone else is there to let him run off leash. |

My dad used to own dobbies when I was young....he bred then for bad reasons though that I won't get into and to this day can't believe..But they are lovable dogs, we had one that was in love with cheese..lol...I remember feeding him/her slices of it..
But yeah a boxer is a very lovable and happy dog too unless trained to attack or is mistreated severely... |
