Puppies for Chirstmas & Parking Lot Puppies
I was on my way to the store today and passed a number of people selling puppies in the parking lot of K-Mart. It just makes us sick to see puppies sold on the street corner. They had the puppies in a exercise pen with a huge sandwich-board sign saying "Puppies for Sale."
Kendra wanted to take down their license plate number and then ask for their license for breeding and street vendor permit, but I kept on driving. As we are getting close to Christmas, I'm sure we will see lots more puppies illegally and unethically for sale. WHAT TO DO????? What do YOU do in situations like this or what have YOU done in the past that was the most effective? FYI-We have a Chihuahua that was bought by a family member (unethically) in WalMart's parking lot. This dog has a slew of health problems the most serious are severe allergies (seasonal, food and fleas), he has an elongated palette that will need surgery, he has severe patella luxation (bowed legs) that needs surgery soon and he is only 4 yrs old. So we adimittmly appose "Parking Lot Puppies". |

Generally, if it's in a public area, I'll do one of two things.
I'll either stop by for a chat while a whole bunch of people are there and ask about health tests and show records and pedigrees and ofas and cerfs and baers and act absolutely surprised and appalled at the very concept of a "breeder" not making a true effort at bettering or preserving the breed. If it's quieter, I'll simply go into the store and make a little stink to the manager regarding the unlawful peddling of puppies. If there's no manager around to kick them out, I'll go out and make up legal nonsense about the neccesity of a license and certification and how I'd hate to see them get in trouble, but... ![]() |

Its illegal here. They try selling at wal mart, kmart and petsmart parking lots and many times have had animal control come and hand out tickets. I'm SO glad something is being done in this area about this, because I agree, it will only get worse as the holidays draw nearer.

It's illegal here as well and animal control is more than happy to hand out tickets as well as then following up with home inspections and making sure all animals on the premise are not only properly cared for but have the proper permits as well as a kennel license since their breeding.
Our AC people have been known to confiscate entire litters right there on the spot if the pups look even the slightest bit unhealthy or are ill and I applaud them for it. I call everytime I see this kind of thing going on within the city limits. A little different in the county as it takes longer for AC to get out there, if their too backed up with current runs it isn't all that unusual for me to try and make a deal with the so called owners of the pups and buy the whole litter from them. You'd be surprised how quickly these people will do it when you wave a bit of cash in their face. I take the pups and place them in forever homes then. If it's in the county and the so called owners aren't willing to play "let's make a deal" then yes, I'll make a stink with the management of the store until their kicked off the property. Nine times out of ten the folks just move on to another lot and I follow them there. I let it be well known that I'm the cause of their woes and have been known to do this for several hours until either AC arrives or they deal with me. This isn't something however that I would recommend doing as a civilian though, people can get really ugly about anything that involves you taking money away from them or when they feel their rights have been violated and can become very violent towards anyone that stands in their way. |

Thats kinda how we recieved MB she was a unwanted gift at Christmas for my walking partner..She doesn't care for animals and didn't put alot of effort into training and seeing to her care.I heard ahe was taking her to the shelter because she was unruly and UNtrainable.
Phil and I asked to see her and feel for those big dark brown eyes. She came to live with us that very day. She is now crate trained we don't even lock the door.So far not many health issues just some food allergies, but we are getting that undercontrol with a good diet. She has no papers we don't know her background we don't care about those things when she brings so much love and joy into our lives. |

I too would call animal control. That just makes me sick to my stomach.
I can't say I've seen pups being sold in parking lots, but on a few occasions seen people selling them out of their cars. Sad thing is they usually do attract attention. I don't think it is illegal here, but it darn well should be. That's our government at it's best, bans Pit Bulls, but people selling dogs out of cars and in parking lots is "just fine". |

Here in Central California you see Puppies sold a lot, but mainly during the holidays. We see them out on county roads near farms, in parking lots, on street corners and sold out of cars. The car people are interesting...sometimes you think they are selling tamales, but then they ask you if you want a puppy, shocking to say the least.
Sounds like we all deal with this situation differently. For me, I think we'll call Animal Control and see what they will do, if anything. Have you heard of the blog used to "expose" unwanted sexual advances in public areas like the subway and reveal identities? I heard the Police Departments are taking notice to it. Is there a site like that blog for puppymills, backyard breeders and parking lot puppy peddlers? Just a thought. |

We could also de-romantisize (sp?) the thought of giving a puppy as a present.
How about a video showing a man giving a woman a puppy. She is very dissapointed because she was sectretly wishing for jewelry or a trip somewhere exotic. Or a parent giving a puppy as a gift who later finds out that the puppy is just another responsibliity that the child dumps on mom and she resents the dog and kid. That's how we got Hank. |

The only circumstances where it could even be remotly appropriate is when you were planning and preparing(in secret) on getting a dog for yourself\family anyways, had already arranged somthing with a reputable breeder ect ect ect and then just used Christmas as an occasion to anounce the surprise.

How does one find out if that's illegal in their state/county? I see them on street corners and out of cars often (whoever's in the car gets an earful of a rant from me. lol My sister tries to avoid having me see it. LOL), but I never thought that maybe I could call animal control and actually have them do something. Somehow I doubt our AC would, but we did just get an animal cop hired, so who knows! I would love to call someone on those people!
If I do find it's not legal I just call animal control for that city directly, yes? |

Tiny ~ You can call you local agency and ask what if any laws / ordinances are in place.

I really feel sorry for the puppies. Especially around the holidays when mom is shopping with the kids and of course they see puppies and want one. Then the pups are taken home and practically forgotten. If I see people selling out of their cars, I go inside and complain to the manager of the store. Sometimes they will ask the people to leave. As for people who sell out of their trucks alongside the road, call animal control and if they don't do anything maybe the local sherrif's office. If enough people do something, maybe it will stop.

My 4 Dogs - I too feel sorry for the puppies and the parents. As all you parents know, we all hate fighting with our kids, especially during the holidays. Since kids can be so convincing, some parents take the risk and get the puppy.
Tiny Albino - Our Animal Control phone # is listed in the phonebook under County AND City Offices so I'm not sure if county, city, state or federal agencies have different roles in matters like this. Personally we call the county # for loose dogs without tags, but we are in the city limits. |
