Dogs sleeping in your bed?
Just wondering what people's opinion is on your dog's sleeping in bed with you.
I keep hearing people warning me that it is a very bad idea to have Sophie sleep in my bed because she won't recognize me as the "alpha" or master. I crated Sophie next to my bed until she was housebroken and she has been sleeping on my bed now for two months. I have noticed absolutely no changes, other than a very content puppy! My opinion is unless you are having dominance/aggression issue with your dog, and you have the room in your bed (!) and WANT the dog to share it with you, there is no problem with it. What do you guys think? |

I have no problem with it! 6 sleep with my mom, 5 sleep with me, and 1 sleeps with my brother. I can't sleep without them in my bed..or else I feel like a part of me is missing.

Any of our dogs are welcome in bed with us. I can't imagine NOT snuggling with my pooches as I drift to sleep!
We have no issues with them not respecting us or not seeing us as "alpha." It's about the total relationship, not that one aspect of it that determines how your dog views you. JMHO though. |

I can't stand dogs in the bed.
I have no problem with other people doing it, it's their choice, but they are never welcome on my bed when I'm sleeping. My dog has his own bedroom (with two beds and a lounge to choose to sleep on) so he's more than content. I have in the past allowed my dog (and my cat when he was alive) to sleep on my bed and hated every second of it. I guess it's just not for me. *shrugs* But like I said, I have no problem with other people doing it. I don't see it as an issue at all unless you're having behavioural problems with your dog. Cass. |

Always room for one more

Like everyone else said, it depends on the dog. If you and your dog have a good bond and no behavioral issues related to dominance, I see no problem with it.
I sleep with my Yorkie every night (have a hard time sleeping without her now!), and my Chi mix is allowed to sleep with me depending on his preference and mine. ![]() |

My whippet mix and my GSD both sleep in the bed....The whippet actually under the covers with me.
My whippet mix has slept in the bed since I got her.....so thats almost 4 years. Never had a single issue with dominance. I actually potty trained my GSD using the "clean den" theory, which is how crate training works. Dogs don't want to go where they sleep, so Rosie woke me up by crying and I'd take her out to go potty. It works quite well, she is the third dog I've potty trained like that. |

my dogs dont sleep with me but that more of a health issue for me .. i unfortunately am allergic to dogs.. as long as i dont let them lick me or sleep in my bed im usually ok but they make themselves quite comfortable on the living room couches and sometimes we end up sitting on the floor, cause there is no room on the couches for us during movie time

As long as the dogs are trained I dont have a problem with it.
We do not allow ours to sleep with us until they are fully crate trained. Then we rotate them. |

Harley sleeps on my bed, actually he cuddles me. But as others said, if you have alpha issues, I would not reccomend it

I always make sure that the dog will move with the cue I choose. If they don't want to move once, they lose bed privileges for a while. They've never gotten snarky but it's MY bed. So I say when they can and can't be on it. Buzz is allowed up whenever he wants to be, whether I'm there or not but I've taught Bailey to wait for me to ask her up. Just easier for me.
But I have no problems, IF I've trained the dog to move when I ask. If I haven't trained it, I don't expect the dog to move, and I also just don't allow them up on the bed. |
