Question A question

I am wondering if it is O.K. to debate topics that don't directly deal with dogs such as: the origin of life, politics, the tallest person in the world, (just kidding ) and that kind of thing. Is it against the rules?

IMO, its always easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission right? I have no idea, but if the question strikes you and you have an opinion, I'd just say your thoughts. Nothing like getting some perspective from the forum, those that don't want to read it don't have to.

Honestly, and this is me speaking as a member not a staff member, when you get into things like "the origin of life" (ie: religion) you come up against people who will never change their mind no matter what side of the fence they're on and therefore it defeats the purpose of a debate in the first place. No one excepts anyone elses point of view and we end up in one huge fight, which is not a good thing. Religion, especially, is based on belief not fact so really there is no use debating any of it. Believe what you want and let others do the same.
I personally think if you want to debate stuff like that (religion, politics etc...), find another forum that specialises in it. I, as a normal member, would rather see this kept to debates about dog issues. We don't need any hatred on the board.

As far as the staffs point of view, I don't think there is any problem with it. Although if I'm wrong Admin will correct me. LOL

Cass.

I completely agree and this is coming as a member.

My grandmother is that type of person. No matter what type of information you put in front of her, she will believe her own way of thinking.

The following is a quote from the "Dog Debate Rules" Sticky.

"Hello, this forum is for debate on current issues as far as dogs, and their place in society."

So please keep debate topics on topics and that topic is dogs and dog related debates.
Thank You for asking prior to posting.

Here is the link to the Dog Debate Rules stick at the top of the debate forum. Debate Rules

As far as I can tell it is alright. I have read a lot threads in Dog Debates section that have nothing to do with dogs. A debate about the origins of life has already been started a while ago on Global Paw in Dog Debates. I personally do not see the point in debating religion however.

That thread is 2 years old and by the debate forum guidelines I have provided that thread is off topic for a Global Paw debate forum topic. Hense the original posters question is answered. Debate topics should be kept to dog realted debates.

I don’t know about you but my “religious beliefs” are based on solid facts- Not belief-personally I wouldn’t want to stake my entire life on something I didn’t know for sure was true. I am surer my “religion” is true than I am sure the grass is green. And I am pretty sure the grass is green! (The reason I keep putting “religion” in parentheses is because I am a Christian so I have relationship with Jesus Christ so the word “religion ''sounds too solemn for me!) “Religion’’ is the most important issues of our lives, it is a life and death issue, in fact. “religion'' for me IS the truth, the facts more solid than anyting else in life! It should be based on facts more than a debate on the use of choke chains, for example; because in the end who cares whether a leash pop helps in training or not? What really matters is who we spend our days serving, ourselves or God and whether we end up in heaven or hell. I don't want to gamble on that!In a debate on choke chains, though I prefer to throw them out the window: there are dog trainers who can use them safely and humanely so neither of us is “wrong”. But in “Religion” there is absolute truth. What we think never changes what is true. So in that way it is more logical to debate about something that has one answer-black and white than something that can have multiple solutions and gray areas like the recent debate on shock collars.

Religion was never meant to keep to yourself-you are supposed to tell others about it! If I had a cure for cancer it would be cruel to keep it to myself, when people are dying. It would be my duty to tell everyone would it not? Well I know something that is much greater than a cure for cancer it is news that changes your whole life and your eternal destiny! HOW COULD I POSSIBLY KEEP THAT TO MYSELF?

As stated before this is not the place for a religious debate.
Religion is a very personal subject with thousands of views and beliefs and this is not the place for it.
Please stick to dog related debate topics.
