Obamas Dog...
Why do you guys think the Obamas chose Portugese Water Dog?
I am not familiar with this breed (behavior, etc...) Good or bad choice for them? |

I think it is a pretty good choice. PWDs are mid sized, great with kids, non shedding coat, very smart, trainable, and active. They are friendly, but also have a protective/reserved side to them.
Considering everything the dog (or pup) will have at its disposal, I'm sure it will fit right in!

Have to agree with Ritz. I think a PWD is a great choice for the Obama family. They are high energy, not overly large, or something that is going to be seen as a "fashionable" small dog. They require some amount of grooming, but they knew they wanted a "non-shedding" dog... so all in all, I think they made a great choice. Now let's just hope they get one from a "good" breeder, but a rescue would be even better!

I think it was a smart choice that fit all the criteria they had set for a new dog. He sure is cute too.

Well I have to say I love PWD's we are picking up our PWD puppy on July 19th. The breeder has four adults that they show and what amazing dogs. They are very intelligent, energetic, a great size, good with kids and other animals (if socialized properly)...
I think it's a good choice for the Obama's because I'm sure their dog has a dog walker and a trainer. These dogs need something to do. They are a working dog so left to their own devices will find their own entertainment. |

I believe the dog was given to them by a fellow polititan who breeds them. I agree with everyone else, it was an excellent choice of dog. I would have cried if they'd gone with the designer mutt that one of the daughters had mentioned she wanted. Thank the gods they chose a well bred pure breed.
Although a shelter mutt would have been great too. Cass.

I think it was a great choice!
Especially considering they were also looking at a "goldendoodleoodlespoodledaloodle" LOL Would have been a very silly choice considering there is no guarantee poodle crosses won't shed and will be suitable for people with allergies. A rescue dog would have also been a nice choice, but I understand why they went a purebred considering their daughter has allergies and they needed a dog that was a guaranteed non-shedder. They did all their research and found a breed that was suitable for their lifestyle and requirements. I wish more people would make such an educated choice! |
