Low on food, can I add something to make it more filling?
I had someone drive me all over town this weekend looking for my usual Nutro because I noticed Abbie's supply is getting low, but a lot of the stores were pretty wiped out, and I couldn't buy another brand as her stomach is sensitive and she is an extremely picky eater. But I found a huge 35lb bag on sale at PetFoodDirect.com. Problem is, its been 4 days and i haven't heard a word from them, no shipping notification or anything. It could very well be the weekend til I get it, and I won't be able to get out to a Petco to see if its back in stock until next week anyway.
So the food is getting lower and lower, and I've already cut in half the usual amount she gets to make it last. But I feel bad that she's getting less. So I figured if I could mix in something to fill her up a bit more it wouldn't be so bad. She's 89lbs, and has been getting 3/4 to 1 cup a day now. Should I mix something like hamburger and rice in with it to give her more of a meal? Or will she be fine going a bit hungry for awhile? I feel terrible I waited til Black Friday weekend to notice she needed food. I didn't know the pet industry did BF, as I never got any notices for sales or anything. But apparently Nutro was 50% off around here so the shelves were cleared, even of canned. ![]() |

I don't see any problem with adding a little bit of hamburger to her meal.. I always have a hard time mixing rice with my dog's food because after it's prepared, it tends to look like maggots... Ew! One thing I might do is cook the hamburger a little bit first... not sure if feeding a dog raw meat is good for them or not, but I'd do it just to be on the safe side.. Someone on here should know the answer to that question, I guess.
![]() Good luck! Hope they restock those shelves... I tend to avoid leaving the house on Black Friday... I hate large crowds compacted around me... makes me nervous.. lol |

Raw meat is actually great for them. Some people even feed entirely raw, with proper supplements and veggies I think. There's a sticky on it somewhere on this forum. Supposedly its the healthiest you can do, but I don't have enough access to a butcher to feed it.
I just hope the food I ordered arrives. Won't be ordering from them in a pinch again. |

I would not add raw meat to kibble if you are low on food I would do a meat meal and a kibble meal but I would not put them together.....
If you are trying to add bulk and your dog does ok you can add veggies.... greenbeans... corn... peas...... you can add pasta..... rice you can add yogurt or cottage cheese..... canned baked beans.... however I would not add meat to kibble... while some do it wiht no problems... there is the potential for stomach upset if your dog is not used to it..... good luck s |

Raw meat mixed with Kibble is not a good idea. Raw meat digests at a different rate than kibble and can cause stomach issues.
You could feet raw meat in the morning and kibble in the evening, or you can cook the meat and add it. As mentioned, green beans are a good supliment, as is pasta, rice, cottage cheese, If her stomach is picky I would just be careful, like sticking with bland things. After you fry the hamburger try rinsing it off with water to get rid of any oil, this will help her stomach. |

Boiled chicken and rice is excellent for those dogs who have very sensitive stomach's. I only feed my girls "real" foods now anyway, and they couldn't be happier or healthier.

Hmmm I would listen to the others. If your going to give veggies, make sure you blend them up in a blender before feeding. I would also try canned pumpkin, I've heard it works as a good filler. If you go with pumpkin make sure that its straight plain pumpkin with nothing added....none of that canned pie filling.

Your dog weighs 89 pounds and it only gets 1 cup per day of food? That seems really low to me. Esp with an average food like nutro. My dogs eat at least double that and they only weigh 50 and 60 pounds.
You can add raw egg, canned salmon. as well as chicken, meat, rice and veggies I agree wit the others tho-- you might want to seperate meat and kibble. Many dogs can't handle too much fat so if you do make ground beef etc- make sure you cook it well and drain all the fat that you can. You could also add some salmon rollover if they carry it at your ept store. Dogs love it and it's relatively healthy. |

I agree on the amount. My kids are a bit smaller and get about twice that and they are trim.
I add yogurt in my kids food. I think that since your pup has a sensitive tummy that bland is the way to go. cottage cheese, boiled chicken JMO |

The amount is only short term, until the large back of food arrives and i don't have to scrimp it anymore. Normally she gets 1 1/2-2 cups, which is what the vet said she should be getting..
thanks for the advice. i'll check what we have and see what i can whip up for her. |

Sounds like you are getting lots of helpful hints. Just had to at my 0.02 I usually make scrambled eggs for our pups. They also like grated veggies, apples, avocado, turkey, chicken .... I had one dog that loved oatmeal.
You could also switch food, we just switched to the EVO diet, I'm sure that one didn't go on special if your pet store carries it. |
