Dog Food Recipes - Pumpkin

Anyone have good dog food or snack recipes with pumpkin?

I made one up today, in theory the dogs should like it but I'll have to try it out tonight.

Here is mine:

Pumpkin Yogurt Cheesecake

1/4 c homemade goat yogurt cheese
1/2 c baked or canned pumpkin meat (previously I tried 1/4c but it was too rich)

Mix together and feed to dog or use as a Kong stuffer.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

OK so I tried it out....Hank loves it and is now searching for scraps of it left by Montana. Montana liked it but she is not looking for more.

I tasted it before I gave it to the dogs...it is a little on the rich side with a 1:1 ratio, so I edited the recipe so it's 1:2. I'd add more pumpkin...

Now I'm going to try a baked version to see if Montana likes that better. It's just not treat material for the old girl

Poor Jeff, he endured some pretty good doggy gas last night while watching the TV....sorry. He is blaming the pumpkin snack but I think it might be the chow mien they stole of our daughters plate last night

I'll try the pumpkin snack again tonight to see if he is right.

That's one of the reasons why I'm not a big fan of pumpkin, its full of fiber, meaning there's going to be "waste" after eating it.

Poops are fine, just gas. I gave the pups tummies 1 night off, last night. So I gave them both some pumpkin tonight, we'll see if it's the pumpkin or the yogurt cheese.

OK, so the pumpkin is not the culprit, it's the cheese

I tried giving plain yogurt and pumpkin today so we'll how it goes.

WooHoooooo! What a great bit of info.

Brody gives "Dad" a run for his money in the "air biscuit" category. I've been giving bits of cheese to the dog (not the dad, he's just old), and when pup and mom are in bed, pup butt is a challenge (spacewise and sniffwise).

Brody just let me know today that he likes raw potato. I haven't read anywhere that that's bad. Anybody else know....good or bad idea? (It was a few tiny bites, with a good sit and down, and I have potatoes about once a week).

As far as I know, regular potato (fresh not when it's turned green on skin) is empty calories. Someone told me once that you can get worms from raw potato, not sure if that is true. Worth checking out though. I feed sweet potato and yams. My dogs like it. About old potatoes or potatos with green skins...the green is the chlorophyl developing because the potatoe is turning into a plant, not just a tuber. From what I understand, when a tuber is transforming from dormant to growing plant stage, it has toxic compounds that increase in time. I'd do some more research just to make sure dogs are not affected by those toxins. HTH

I can't take credit for air biscuit; that's a Whoopie Goldberg thing. I just thought it apropos.

Good advice on the white potato, though, about the carbs. I don't eat that many, about 1 a week, so Brody wouldn't be getting more than a thumbnail's worth. And I do know about the green potato skin thing, so no worries there.

I do love sweet potatoes, but usually get them canned or frozen. Think I may try my hand at sweet potato fries and Brody can give some raw pieces a try then.

I knew that green potatoes were bad just did not know why and what happened. Here's a quote and link to Wikipedia.

Toxic compounds in potatoes.

Quote:
The National Toxicology Program suggests that the average American consumes at most 12.5 mg/day of solanine from potatoes (note that the toxic dose is actually several times this, depending on body weight). Dr. Douglas L. Holt, the State Extension Specialist for Food Safety at the University of Missouri - Columbia, notes that no reported cases of potato-source solanine poisoning have occurred in the U.S. in the last 50 years and most cases involved eating green potatoes or drinking potato-leaf tea.

Solanine is also found in other plants, mainly in the mostly-deadly nightshade family, which includes a minority of edible plants including the potato and the tomato, and other typically more dangerous plants like tobacco. This poison affects the nervous system causing weakness and confusion.
