Menadione

Many dog foods has this as an ingredient, Kirkland, Nutro Ultra. It is a synthetic K3.

Should the foods that contain it get a lower rating than those without? Does anyone try and avoid this ingredient?

The FDA doesn't want humans to consume this synthetic vitamin.

Synthetic Vitamin K, that is just wrong....I cannot believe this is allowed.

Wow, I for one was not aware of this vitamin supplement for dogs, but after reading the info you linked to, I cannot help but to avoid it. Since I have a dog with Cancer already, I cannot in good faith feed her that crap.

I say chop their rating drastically. There is not excuse for synthetic Vit K, there are plenty of natural sources to choose from for animals and people.

I wonder why...they seem to let lots of bad stuff slip through the cracks. Interesting! Looks like the FDA does not trust us to self regulate the dose and you can get the K3 prescribed by a physician. I'm a little confused K3 is toxic to humans at large doses but K1 and K2 are not. So why allow K3 to be made for any purpose. Does not add up...I feel like I'm missing a piece of the puzzle.

To answer the why to the question how come they allow it in dog food. It's because it's synthetic and CHEAP!

My concern is do we actually know what is in that dry kibble or canned food we are feeding our furkids? I know there are ingredients on the bag and they are supposed to be honest about what is in the food but come on really?? I do not trust any of them. I don't care what kind of reputation they have for quality they are all trying to cut costs and cut corners to make a product and a profit at the same time.....

Thats why I home cook for my kiddos.

What I meant was the health and safety of our animals is second or may third to the financial gain of lobbying companies and foreign policy. It's a shame.

So true, the more I educate myself, the more I feed my dogs "real" food and the more guilty I get for feeding kibble out of laziness.
