Question The vet said Royal canine or Wellness for Niki

The vet recommended Royal Canine or Wellness for Niki.

They do not sell any dog food other than the prescription food D/W.

He just thought that Innova is good food, but maybe too rich and he had never heard of Merrick.

If Niki is too sensitive, he thinks she might better off with one of these two foods, but he emphasized Royal Canine.

What do you think?
I know nothing about Royal Canine and very little about Wellness.

Are they good foods?

Royal canin is not a good food. The first ingredient is chicken MEAL, then Rice, then ground corn. None of that is good for dogs. An actual meat product is listed 6th on the list of ingredients, when it should be first.

wellness is a good food, I would also recommend Chicken soup for the dog lovers soul/or puppy lovers soul.

Innova is probably your best bet though .

I was feeding Innova, but Niki has a very sensitive stomach the least I can say at the moment as she might have more serious problems and she needs a more simple food. She had inconsistent loose stools with Innova and Proplan (the breeder's food), and worse on Merrick.

I tried to feed top foods Innova or Merrick, but Niki's stomach has decided against them.

If you are planning to stick with that same vet, you should go with Wellness. Punky is right as RC is not a good food. Wellness is decent and its canned food is considered ultra-premium. Wellness has kibble which is better than most.

I'm not a fan of any kibble. I agree w/Dr. Marty on feeding.

I'm surprised you vet never heard of Merrick. Based on your comments on all of the threads you've started on this topic, you need a better vet.

Just to clarify something. Chicken meal is better than chicken. Chicken meal has been dehyrated so there is more of it in the food, compared to chicken that has not. They are both good, but meal is better. I do not like foods with a lot of filler. Honestly, if you can get it, I would try natural balance, seems to be an easier food to digest.
Sorry Punkygirl, just wanted her to get the correct facts...
CanidaeŽ Pet Foods: Meat vs. Meal

I think what punkygirl was trying to say, is not to look for anything with BYproducts in it.

Sorry, I think I have confused you! This recommentation is not from my regular vet; it is from the vet Niki saw for the emergency when I rushed her in because her vet was closed and it is the vet that Niki had her first xrays done because it is cheaper than her regular vet almost by half price.

Her regular vet knows about Merrick.

Does anyone know if Wellness ingredients are US made? Canada, Germany ok.

Just nothing from China until I can trust them again.

So are planning on switching again? Why?

Aren't you already mixing her food with a high fiber food you got from the vet?

About the origin of the meats in the dog food, you might have to call the food company for that information. I'm sure their sources of meat fluctuate with market prices and they use who ever is cheaper but yet meet their standards and quality guidelines. One batch may have chicken parts from Mexico and then the next batch will have chicken parts from the U.S. It's my understanding of labeling restrictions that "Made in the USA" only means the ingredients are mixed in the US, not all the ingredients are from the US.

I did not want to switch foods. That vet recommended that I do, just in case she has allergies. Her regular vet disagreed. He just told me that he does not think is a good idea to switch foods, and I should keep it as simple as possible. He suggests that I keep her on the presctiption food only for a while, so we can see if it is indeed the type of food the problems or maybe the food type has nothing to do with it and we need to be able to eliminate the things that could bother her. If I switch again and she continues to feel well, we would be starting from #1 trying to see if it is the new food that bothers her.

This time I agree with him, and I am not going to give her a new food.

If memory serves, Chicken Soup has a ton of ingredients and, while a decent food, not something I would give to a dog with possible allergies.
