eat better dog bowl? how to stop dog eating/drinking so fast?

Hi Everyone,

Peanut (1 year old chihuahua) eats and drinks too fast and sometimes ends up throwing it all back up. I have seen they do a "eat better" bowl and a "drink better" bowl which look awesome, however they are $39 each (and then shipping on top!!) and I cannot afford that. I was wondering if anyone knows another company that makes a bowl just like this please? Or any other tips on stopping him eating and drinking too fast? I have put the bowls up higher so he does not have to keep bending his head down so often and limited how much food and water goes in the bowl at one one time.

I would love to hear any advice!

Thanks!

You may not need a special bowl for Peanut but you may need to change the way you feed him so he stops gorging.

What do you feed him?

How often do you feed him? Do you free feed or does he have "meal times"?

If you really want to try something like that bowl, you can make your own. Scatter his food on a plate w/ large rocks or mugs on it. You can also try an ice cube tray or muffin tin (right side up or upside down).

Hi

Thank you for your reply and your suggestions. He was eating Science diet as recommended by a vet so assumed it was good (later found out that it is apparently not) he rarely ate that food. I am not sure what food he is eating at the moment, my husband got it but its not good. I am trying to research what would be a good brand of food for him to eat. Do you know of a good brand please?

Thanks again!

If Peanut is gorging on kibble and then drinking lots of water, it might be best to "rehydrate" the kibble before you feed it to him. Kibble is too dry for most dogs and they get horribly thirsty after eating, which can get problematic with bloating issues and vomiting, like he is doing.

What Science Diet variety did the vet recommend, is it a prescription diet? If it's a prescription diet, you may need to consult your vet before you switch around foods incase there is an underlying condition that needs to be addessed.

There are many good kibbles out there if you are interested in kibble. I have a Chi and he liked Innova EVO when I was feeding kibble, he eats home cooked meals and raw foods now. You can also look at some of the other premium kibbles out there, some brand names that come to mind are Eagle Pack Holistic, Wellness, Orijen, ZiwiPeak, Solid Gold, Wysong and California Natural/Innova. It really depends on Peanuts nutritional needs, food sensitivities and availability in your area.

You may want to check out this thread if you have not already, it's a little out of date but still has great information:

Hi! Thanks again for reply. I will print that article and take it with me to pet stores! He was not on Science Diet for any reason, just was told it was the best dog food out there, but I read some stuff on here that said it was not!! Thank you so much for the information!

Here's another link for dog food information, not sure if you made your mind up yet, but this may help in your journey to great food for Peanut.

There are several good brand foods. Here is a website that has reviews on dog food brands. A 5 star rated food is probably a great choice!

Hope that helps.
