Fun Dog Food history thread

Before commercial pet foods were available, what did your family feed their dogs?

I thought it would be fun to see the variety.

My step-mom's family fed fried rice and broth soups, she is from the Philippines so it was wholesome, not the greasy take-out type. They had some type of lap dogs, she doesn't remember what they were called.

My maternal Grandma's family fed left-overs, they mainly ate lots of root veggies and German meals, nothing fancy, rich or spicy. They had Rough Collies.

I don't know what they fed the dogs, but my dad was telling me how Grandma would put together some gravy from the odds and ends laying around and drizzle it over bread for their cats.

I remember what my grandmother was feeding them even when there was commercial food.. She fed them leftovers, ANY type. Spaghetti, bread, cookies, soups. She had VERY obese dogs. I remember her dachshund Ginger was a miniature, and she weighed over 20 pounds. And I also remember she got pregnant, and had to have a C section because she couldn't reach down there. But that was actually in my time, and she was in her late 70s-early 80s and wasn't taking good care of her dogs anymore. She used to take great care of her dogs when she was younger.

Before that, I have no idea what she fed them.

My grandparents raised me and always fed their dogs real food. (our left overs) She didn't cook spicy foods at all. They ate pretty bland, and so I had to as well. The Boston Terrier they had that I grew up with lived to be 23 years old and not a bit over weight. I've always fed my dogs real food as well, but I cook differently for them than I do for us.

In Greece, they just throw them left overs, spaggetti, bread, etc., like the punky's grandmother did. That was not that far past ( just over 11 years ago when I was still there). Now, I have no idea if things changed, but I highly doubt they have changed much. Whatever we did not finish, instead of the trash would go to the dogs and cats.

When I was very young, we had a couple hunting dogs, but they weren't pets. I didn't even have any contact with them. They were fed our leftovers and the occasional rabbit or chicken.
