What Did You Use To Feed...What Do You Feed Now?
My first three dogs they ate whatever we ate [the scraps]....just how my family was raised given dogs food....we weren't exactly ''americanized'' at the moment.
When I got Didi, we fed Pedigree....but not knowing about the whole a dog should stay on one brand of kibble, depending on money we fed her, Pedigree, Kibbles N Bits, Ol'Roy, Publix brand, and Beneful. Canned Food: Mighty Dog, Pedigree, and Little Caesar. We got Pepe at the HS, they offered Purina, we switched to that. Went back to Pedigree. Canned also Pedigree. Then my sister got puppies from Petland , but they offered Nutro, so we fed that.Took the new pups to the vet, they offered Science Diet, we fed that. Also canned food. Now learning about dog food more and more, we feed Candiae. Also canned food. As far as treats go, we fed milkbones, canine carry outs, greenies, snausages, beggin strips, publix brand, ol'roy. Now treats are boneless chicken, hot dogs, ect. Thinking of getting treats made by Nutro. |

Harley used to be on Eukanuba when he was a puppy, and we fed Abby Pedigree. We now feed both of them Royal Canin Weight Control Diet. There's no corn, by-products or wheat.

Mandi used to be on whatever I could find at petsmart. I knew about what was 'good' and 'bad' in dog foods, but had no idea where to get it, so she just ate what ever I thought was the most nutricious at Petsmart. I think she was on ProPlan for a while, and the last food she ate was actually pretty good, but having thrown the bag away I can't remember what it was lol. Now I found better pet food stores, and she gets Wellness Core.

when I was growing up, my family used to feed scraps, raw meats, raw eggs, kibble from the feed store and grocery store, not sure what they were.
Before I knew anything about nutrition, I fed all types of Iams, Nutro, Purina (got free at work) and Kirkland (Costco) kibbles not really paying attention to what was in them. After I learned about Nutrition, I switched to grain-free foods mostly EVO, and now we feed a raw diet with some cooked meats. |

Dogs main diet was Euk or Iams. I started learning about dog food so they've eaten a wide range of foods.
The foods they've been on for an extended period of time are Nature's Variety, Taste of the Wild, and Fromms. I like those brands and seem to rotate between the three. The foods I fed them uhh... Wellness (Simple Solutions and CORE) Canidae Eagle Innova (regular and EVO) Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul California Natural HealthWise Merrick |

I used to feed Innova. Then after the big "Scare" I decided to stop buying manufactured products for the dogs so I would know exactly what they are eating. So I home cook.
A general recipe I use often is Chicken breast (cooked) with raw green beans, cauliflower, apples and oatmeal. All of the ingredients are grated in a blender with the exception of the oatmeal. |

Blackie and Rose used to eat a store brand of dog food. It was a HUGE bag and cheap. Horrible ingredients. I started to do more research into different brands of food and we switched to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul.
Chloe originally started out eating Blue Buffalo puppy food (it was more convient to get than Chicken Soup), but it was giving her really loose poo, so I switched her to the Chicken Soup formula and haven't looked back since. Treat wise, Blackie and Rose used to each get two HUGE milkbones a day and if I saw them sitting at the backdoor I would give them some table scraps. Needless to say, they were fat. Blackie was close to 90lbs and Rose was pushing 70lbs. I now only occasionally give them table scraps, they get two small milkbones a day, and I use the Beggin Strips for training and such. Their weight is now good - Rose is around 55-60lbs and Blackie is around 75-80lbs. Chloe weighs 42lbs and, IMO, could probably gain a couple of pounds. She'll go through spells where she'll refuse to eat her food. I figure if she gets hungry enough she'll eat it. After about a week of refusing her food and only eating a cup a day, she's now started to eat again. Dumb dog. |

Many years ago when we had 2 dogs (Our toy poodle and dachshund now deceased we fed Science Diet), then we switched to KIbbles and Bits and numerous other Purina brands. The last was Beneful. And now we feed Kirkland Signature (Which is not at the very top, but its a good affordable food).
When I first got Lucy though, she was being fed Chicken soup wet and dry. Now she eats Innova wet, and Nutrical to pump up her weight. Shes STILL a skinny dog. |

Jake got whatever was cheapest. Not Ol'Roy, but Alpo, Pedigree, Purina, but most of the time, President's Choice (the worst of the three). Only dry, he never got canned. The only good thing was that he also often got frozen beef ribs in the winter (and sometimes the summer) so at least he was getting actual meat, lol
When he was about 5 or 6, I decided to try higher up foods using my allowance, and started with Nutro Natural Choice and then Natural Balance. When he turned 7 and had surgery on his leg, I went across the street from the vet hospital and bought a bag of California Natural. And we haven't looked back since. Now he's on RAW and he's loving it. He's turning 10 in a few weeks, and we're going to celebrate! The cats have the same story: they used to eat Whiskas (or Friskies, I can never remember which is which, lol), but when Jake got converted, they did as well, usually eating the same brand of food as him (except when he was eating Timberwolf Organics; around that time, we got Molly, who was having difficulities with food, so for the next year I was trying several different foods to pinpoint her "allergy." Turns out she just can't digest the carbs in dry food, so the cats are on a RAW diet now as well.) |

When I first got River he was on Innova kibble and California Natural puppy. I then found out how bad the pet shop that is the only place in Australia where you can buy this food is so I stopped buying that.
He was then switched to Nutrience which was ok with yogurt and sardines added. Then we tried Nutro and then finally Eagle Pack Holistic. He's always had a modified version of what we eat for dinner or a meaty bone of some description twice a week. By the time we got to Eagle Pack though he was eating chicken necks, hearts, giblets, yogurt, sardines etc with it and I finally got the confidence up to drop kibble from his diet completely. He absolutely loves meal times now - eating kibble was always such a chore for him - with the exception of Eagle Pack's Anchovy formula which he thought was the best The best thing about feeding raw is the huge variety he's able to eat - neither of us ever know if he's going to get chicken, beef, goat, lamb, pork etc until I actually pull it out of the fridge ![]() |

Zoe's Mama

When I first got Zoe, she was onProPlan, cause that's what the rescue were feeding her. She also got Pedigree and Ceasar wet food.
Eventually we started to educate ourselves and realized those brands were terrible. So we tried Nutro Natural Choice but Zoe did terrible on that. Next we tried Eagle Pack. She was on that for awhile and did good. But I wanted even better. Now sh'es on Wellness and I'm pretty happy with it. But lately I've been looking into raw food. Going to get some to try for next weekend. This weekend didn't work out. Cats also get Wellness. |

I'm sure that when our parents and grandparents raised dogs on the same food they ate was a much better idea than any dog food even if they did get a few things that were fat or spicy, they were healthier in the long run.
I home cook for mine. Have been home cooking for dogs for 48 years. Wouldn't have it any other way. By the way, Chicken Soup for the dog lovers soul was also one of the dog food brands that were on the recall list. |

It was their moist food that was put on recall, not their dry. Trust me, I looked. LOL Scared the bejeebers out of me a while back when I saw it on the recall list and then I gave a big sigh of relief when I saw it was only the moist food.

Missie went from something she was on at the pet store (might've been Wellness, but that was 8 years ago, so who really knows!), to Science Diet. She was on Science Diet until she developed allergies, and then went on a special diet for that. Trixie came to me on Science Diet, Ollie came to me on a grocery store brand, and Aysa was on Nutro. Now everyone eats Kirkland lamb and rice. I'm not entirely happy with it and think we could do better, but affordability is an issue right now, so we're just working with it for now. :-/ Oh, Missie and Ollie were on Canidae for a period of time, too, as that's what I was planning to feed Aysa when I brought him home; but they got sick, and nothing seemed to help until we just switched foods. I loved how nice their coats were on it.
