I have now taught Gabby leave it so she has to sit and leave it before she gets her food. She is pretty good now. Lucy can hold it up to a few minutes if I make her although she might have drool hanging all the way to the floor. lol

I make Mazie do a bunch of things if she wants a cookie or other goodies.
My mom thinks its mean and cruel and she threatens to make me do tricks for treats, too... LOL.. Some people don't understand ![]() |

I mean, if you only feed your dog one meal a day, does it matter what time you feed them? Morning, noon, or night? I thought I read somewhere that it's better to feed at night cause it keeps them quiet at night? I was really just curious.

I still feed twice a day because I find it easier to monitor and adjust how much to feed depending on how much training we're doing and how much exercise he's had. His main meal is usually breakfast and then two nights a week he has a bone for dinner, another two nights are training nights so his treats make up his dinner and the remaining three nights he has a modified version of whatever we're having. |

I fed before bed to aid in digestion and help reduce risks of bloat when fed large meals. I didn't want my dogs to run and play after meals. Right now I measure out Hank's daily food allowance and feed from that all day long for training, no more big meals. It's working for us so far. |

No one is really active here until noon and Zoe tends to laze around with us so there's no chance of bloat with her. But this is a good thread. I've been making Zoe work harder for treats. I've started up with the over and under tricks tonight ![]() |

More tricksI wasn't worried about bloat either until I met lots of people who lost dogs to torsion. A housemate lost a Jack Russel and a co-worker lost a lab, so I'm just mindful but try not to be paranoid. Good thing it's treatable ![]() |

Always room for one more

The dogs that are obnoxious during feeding have to sit before getting any food, the well-behaved ones don't. lol Missie is the only one I'm strict with 'cause she inevitably spills kibbles jumping up into the cup as I'm lowering it to the bowl, and Trixie for similar reason. But like Aysa, who doesn't even come over until the bowl is down, nah.
And they all sit for treats, too (except Aysa. He really has the life around here, apparently. lol He's just flat out the one that behaves all the time!). I should be more imaginative, but I've always been lazy with training. ![]() |
