Switching to Blue Buffalo Chicken and Rice?...
I've been feeding my little guy ScienceDiet and I really want to switch to Blue Buffalo because I don't think Science diet is cutting it...
According to a post in this section Science Diet gets an F while Blue Buffalo gets and A(or is it A+...). I'm actually going to be switching two of my dogs although the other one isn't exactly mine...want her to get some good food too. Should I slow the switching process like weening off of Science diet? I've had to switch his food immediately before(from Pedigree to Beneful which he ate for about a month...ick), and he did not get sick at all...I think he's got an iron stomach. He's had some weird food and hasn't been "sick"(diarrhea or vomiting) for literally 4 months now. Should I ween him off or just do 50/50 for a few days or what? |

I'd wean him off, just to be safe. A switch from Science Diet to Blue Buffalo is going to be a big switch in terms of the ingredients used.
I think a weaning off period of about a week would be good. Do a 1/6 day one, then 1/3, then 1/2, then 2/3, then 5/6, then you are set! I've never been good with switching slowly. Chloe has a sensitive stomach and she has withstood that plan of attack from me. I just switched Blackie and Rose cold turkey, but I didn't have a choice. Their stomachs weren't upset, but they also ate a whole chocolate cake once and didn't get sick, so.... |

K...thanks. I'll probably ween him like you said so he doesn't get an upset stomach...don't want him to be uncomfortable just because I'm trying to get him better nutrition...
The chocolate thing is weird. Junior ate 6 giant brownies out of a pan of 9(the other three had been eaten already) and didn't get sick. When I got a hold of the brownie people they said there was 1.91 oz of chocolate in one bag of brownie mix. In other words a 2 pound dog would need to eat all of the brownies to have serious issues(or 2-3 for a vet visit). While Junior(63 pounds) will need to eat 23 boxes of brownie mix(and this box was large....lol). Thanks for the quick reply I'm getting him the food tomorrow and starting the process with both dogs. Hopefully they like the new food because it's somewhat expensive but I can't put a number of him being happy and healthy. |

You know, I use to think the Buffalo was expensive as well, until I realized how much of it they eat. The food is so filling and such high quality, they wont gorge themselves on it and for me, a 15lb bag of the sweet potato and whitefish mix will last me a good month til I have to buy more. When you break it down, it's not that much more and the reward that you'll have a healthier pet is worth the price alone.
