How much Pumpkin?
As some of you may or may not know OC has been having loose stooles partially due to being given too much watermelon at once and partially due to the heat we've been having (once he gets loose stooles his tummy's very sensitive until I can get them normal again and then he can tolerate a lot of things once more). So I went out and bought some canned pumpkin to help out his tummy (along with some ground beef and rice) but I was just wondering, how much pumpkin should one feed a 61Lbs dog and how often?

One of my pugs sometimes developes a bit of a loose stool, so I give him a spoonful of pumpkin, once a day, for just a couple days. Works like a charm every time. That same amount has worked very well in the past when I had fosters that wound up doing a quick food change (unknown background, unknown what they ate before coming here, so they got the runs a bit), but similar to a pugs size. So I'd guess a couple tablespoons for yours. Guessing. I don't think it's much of an exact science. I give a bit, if mine still have the runs, I give a bit more, that sort of thing.

For Topper, who pumpkin works for like a charm, I mix a whole can into about 3 cups of rice. Now he's kind of picky, so that may take two meals for him to get down. Laney eats the pumpkin all by itself, but she eats sticks, poo, cat leavings and bugs too.... You can't really overdo the pumpkin, it's really just a big fiber source that gets everything solid again.
Now make sure you got just the pumpkin, not the pumpkin mix with all the spices and sugar, that would make the stool worse! |

Pumpkin will work in both ways (firming or softening) depending on the current condition of the dog. In the past I have given about 1 tbsp to my 50 pounder to stablize the stool. The amount is not ususally an issue as mine have eaten as much as a half a pumpkin with no ill effects.
