Dog food
I know there are a ton of postings on dog food that is bad, good etc. But I was wondering if anyone has heard of ProPlan it is sold at Petsmart and is it a good brand to feed a dog? Also do you have any affordable recommendations if it isn't good?
Also I have a senior dog and she doesn't eat senior dog foods well, any suggestions there I really don't want her to gain any more weight it wouldn't hurt if she lost some pounds. |

Bring it

my friend uses ProPlan, and it seems fine for her dog. For an old dog try canned food, i dont know why but (to my dogs) it tastes good and soft on old teeth. You can let her gain weight just take her for walks to burn it off. My dog isnt walked much but hes in top shape.

For the price they are charging you for ProPlan you can do much better. A better quality food will not require as many cups per feeding so you will save money in the long run by feeding a better food. I use Canidae which is approved for all life stages so you could feed it to your senior as well. If it is not palpatable to her add in some canned food. So I would recommend Canidae, Innova, Eagle Pack, Solid Gold, Blue Buffalo, or any of the other high quality ingredients foods out there.

I have used ProPlan in the past, my pugs did fine on it. Then I moved on to Exclusive, better ingredients, similar price.... and now we are on Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul.. similar pricing. To sum it up.. I think ProPlan is "ok", but for similar $$$, you can get a better quality food.

Thats right pugdawg1
If you look at the ingredients list on the bag a good dog food will have the first ingredient would be meat not meat by products. Also there will be no corn corn gluten or wheat gluten used as fillers. Rice and brewers rice for fillers is acceptable. You can get Blue Buffalo, Canidae and the Chicken soup for the dog lovers soul for about the same price as the pro plan. Just check the labels for yourself and then you decide. |

One can never have too many dogs!
I think ProPlan is pretty bad. Made my dogs really sick. I should have read the ingredients better. The best dog food that PetsMart has is Royal Canin, that is what I use. It comes in breed specific, I will not use Iams or Eukanuba or Science Diet except for a couple of the vet formulas when needed, they are not very good
really. The next best food PetsMart has is the Natural Choice, by Nutro, mine were on that until they started to carry Royal Canin, which they like better anyway. I have never tried Chicken Soup for the Soul, because they do not make a tiny bite sized kibble which I need. If they still have teeth do give them kibble rather than canned as much as possible. Royal Canin like most others does have a formula for overweight dogs as well though I do not use it. |

One can never have too many dogs!
For Mom2Many : I have never used any of the foods you mentioned although I have heard of some of them. Do you know how any of those compare to Royal Canin? None are available where I live but I am getting pretty disgusted with the one PetsMart in town & may start ordering off the internet, if so which is the very best one (that comes in tiny sized bites) if you happen to have experience of many of these foods.....thanks

Nope! Burger King is the easiest place to find burgers, but you arent going to find quality there
![]() Ill post the info tonight, you generall have to find mom and pop stores, although there are chains that do a decent job. Im boycotting one of them so I refuse to put their name here! -Karen |

Petsmart carries Natural Balance and Royal Canin Sensible Choice, which I think are both pretty good foods. Natural balance has very small kibble if thats what your looking for, although my shih tzu can handle any size kibble you give her.
Royal Canin makes several lines, but their Sensible Choice variety is really the only one I consider good. It has no corn and better ingredients than their other varieties. |

My 9 1/2 year old dog gets fed Royal Canin (the special veterinary urinary one) and he is doing really well on it (after having an operation). He seems to enjoy it. Before we switched he was on Science Diet.

I was going to say about the back of the food bag/tin and the 1st ingredient in the list should be meat but as its already been brought up i wont repeat them
Now i used to feed my puppy on pedigree chum for pups which i soon learnt was terrible food for dogs so i went to petsmart over here in the Uk and got naturediet and it is so much better for him and he loves it. Im not sure if you can get it over there but you may want to try it for your older dog, they have diet versions too if you are wanting him/ her to loose some weight. I am not sure if they do senior but to be honest with the ingredients that are in it that doesnt really matter as your dog is still getting a tummy full of good stuff rather than nasties!Hope you find something that works for them! Nutro Ultra is the best food at Petsmart, actually, then it's either Royal Canin or Nutro Natural Choice. Ultra can be ranked up there with the top premiums that don't get sold at Petsmart or Petco, but most people don't realize that.
