I see your point but I, like most people here, aren't actually involved in showing in any way shape or form. To me, feeding your dog good quality food is a given. Why feed them junk, if there is another choice?

Personally, I regularly add water to Harley's kibble / wet food combo...she likes it soupy. What I am saying is that in terms of determining the overall content of a protein source in a dry kibble, proteins that have been reduced to a meal state have had the water already removed whereas whole meats still contain water, and will be significantly reduced during processing. So a meal (remember, specifically named...not generic) will have provide more protein in a kibble than a whole meat. |

Hi. Thank you for doing all of this research and posting it for us. I took my lunch hour today to go to PetSmart to re-read the label on my dog food and purchase new if necessary. Royal Canin Size is listed in your good list, and this is what I've been feeding my female Pomeranian (Puppy for toy breeds since she's nursing right now and it = 33% protein). All of the ingredients are good except it has corn gluten in it. Of the puppy foods it has the most "best" ingredients except this one I am uncertain of, plus it has the highest protein content.

Hi Karen I just wanted to Thank you for all your hard work researching all the different dog foods. It made me make better choices for Emma. After I had read the post I decided to change Emma's food. Which was a great decision.
If I would have continued using the old food Emma was on she may have been affected by the recall. You have saved Emma's life. Thank you so much for being a guardian to all our pets. I've sent many of my friends to Global paw to read this post since first reading it. Global Paw is such a great place!! Thanks again.![]() |

Just wanted to say thankyou for this really informative post
I have been feeding my dog Hills Science Diet and other similar quality food for a year and was gobsmacked to learn how poor quality it is! They gave us free samples of Science Diet at puppy school and it is all you see in vet clinics and pet stores here in NZ, giving most pet owners the impression that it is the best After doing heaps of searching/reading I finally tracked down a supplier of Canidae and have switched both my dog and two cats onto it. This is practically the ONLY high quality food being sold in NZ and you have to order it via internet! I think I have convinced my parents to start feeding their two cats on Canidae - well the cat variety anyway I have tried to spread the word on what junk Hills food is but most people here are absolutely brain washed and refuse to believe me! They think I'm a bit luney Oh well, i'll keep trying to spread the word... |

Yes, the tools of marketing can definitely paint a different picture than the truth...
Like there was just a study done that if you feed your dog Purina puppy food, followed by Purina Dog Food as an adult, you can add two to three years to the dog's life. The study was completely funded and carried out by Purina. Somehow, I don't feel you could really trust that data, do you? Or, I saw a commercial on TV over the weekend, for Iams I think, about how switching dog foods can cause gastric problems and they listed tons of other reasons to NOT switch your dog's food, and to never feed anything but Iams. LOL... well ya, every reason they gave was also in part caused by the food itself. It just cracks me up that these companies stretch the truth to the breaking point. Don't they realize then that when people do their own research... they'll never trust a commercial kibble company again... or at least I won't. |

Yes, I was shocked after I read this list, since most of the food on the ugly list are what are sold at the vets. I was feeding my dog iams, thought it was the best, so after realizing it was not I went to walmart to see what they had, and every single brand there was awful, some of them with corn as the first and/or second ingredient. So I went to the local pet supply thinking the brands would be better, but nope they weren't. I did end up getting eagle pack holistic blend, and was happy to see thats the good stuff.

I feed axe nothing but pinnacle, and home meal.
I'm starting my puppy out and Natural Choice. I read your ingredients list, and it contains NONE of the bad stuff. and about 80% of the good stuff, so I'm assuming it's good. any one have a take on it? |

Thank you so much for the list. I was feeding what I thought was a good food (Science Diet-becuase a vet told me too!) My dog was throwing up every morning and sometimes afternoons too, became really skinny, had dirrohea. Itook him to the vet and they said it would be over $300 do to xrays etc under sedations.
So I said I was going to change his food and see how he was for a week. I printed off the list of food and found a local food store that sold the best food, bought him some pinnacle (which he loves and my cat tries to eat too!) and he was never sick again!! He is back to his usual self and normal weight! THANK YOU!!! ![]() |

Thanks for the post!! I would LOVE to get my dogs on Innova, but its just too expensive, esp. with four dogs! I went from good to bad!! I feed my dogs Nutro, but after the pups were born and needed to go get puppy food, the vet suggested Hill's and now all my dogs are on Hill's. Good thing its a small bag and should be finish in about a week so I can go back to Nutro! I'm going to try Natural Choice, I had them on Max before. Soon I would love to get the dogs on raw, if not maybe daily, but atleast on the weekends or something.

On Evo I'll spend more on buying dog food not only the price but in stock, because I have four dogs so I'll probably need like two 13lb bags to last me a month, so dog food will go from around $20 to $50 a month. I have to wait till this $11 DOLLARS 5 POUND BAG finishes.....whereas I could of gotten a MUCH BETTER quality dog food for only $8!! Or spent about the same for a bag of Evo!! ![]() |

The big thing to remember with premium quality food is that you feed less of it to your dog each meal than you do of the bad quality stuff. Because there is more nutrional value in the good quality than the bad. Check the serving size suggested on the bags to compare. A premium bag will most likely go farther than a bad quality bag of the same size.
