Poodle-mix fur....matting with harness

Mocha is a poodle mix of some sort. The verdict is out on what exactly makes him up. Some have said he looks a bit like a bichon, others have said a little maltese. Personally I know he is definitely a poodle something...the other thing might be terrier. But bottom line is that he has very soft fur with the curly fur you see on a poodle.

I have been noticing that he has mats where the harness sits on him and if he wears a sweater, his fur mats up as well.

What type of brush should I be using with him? I try to brush him out, but he still mats up and I've gone to actually using a collar with him instead of the harness because of the matting.

I have been using a small slicker brush and a regular pin brush....maybe that's not the right kind to use on his coat? Mocha does get groomed...about every other month...it's getting expensive though and I try to bathe him myself when I can.

Brush AND comb daily. Sometimes the brushing just does not cut it.

A good detangling conditioner and keeping the coat trimmed under the front legs where the harness rubs and a good pin brush and comb used daily helps. I also do not leave the harness on for any longer than is necessary.

Well, I only put the harness on him when we go for our walks. Same with the sweater..only when it's cold, but I have since stopped using it because of the matting. I find that I have to sometimes cut the mats...I hate to do that because if it mats more, he might go bald! Just kidding. I was just wondering if I was using the right kinds of brushes....sounds like I am. He isn't severely matted or tangled or anything...just noticing that it's doing it under his arms/front legs. I've stopped using the harness and gone to the collar. He does fine walking with the collar now that he's bigger.

I read somewhere that using a leather harness might help with avoiding the fur to get matted. Not sure what to think about the sweater though! Beni was a poodle mix (lhaso apso) and while he wouldn't mat unless he got into something, he did end up getting little dreadlocks. It was so cute

Cut the hair short under the arms. Make sure you use a cream rinse after a shampoo. You can also mix the cream rinse with water and keep it in a spray bottle. Mist before brushing every day. Use a pin brush. The slicker is good for getting the knots out. Brush the coat out after the harness has been used. Winter is really hard on dogs coats too. They get dried out from heating the house and look dull, or they itch.

You need to use a comb as well (i think someone mentioned that) Brushing will only get the top coat. A comb will get down to the skin where mats start.
Also..make sure there are no mats when you bathe your dog. When the coat dries, the mats will get tighter.
