Best collar for long hair breeds?
My groomer was giving me the no-no speech the last time I picked up Gizmo from the groomers. I guess I wasn't using the right type of brush, because while it combs the top part of his coat fine, it doesn't groom his undercoat, which tangles pretty easliy.
I guess he had quite the matts behind his ears, she said that it's probrably part of the collar I have him wearing (just a standard black nylon collar). She said nylon collars help the hair to matt easier and that I should look into getting a "rolled leather" collar. Apparantly that's better. I was planning on getting him a leather collar anyways, because I have read that they're better for long-hair breeds... but what on earth is a "rolled leather" collar? I saw some leather collars at Petsmart, and they look more like a cord, rather than a flat piece of leather. Is that what she ment? I hope not, because the collars were yucky. Before I spend more than normal on a collar, I'd at least like to look at my other options. So what do you guys use to help with tangles? Any ideas where I can get some nicer looking collars? ![]() |

I know your dilemma since I went thru this with both my Yorkies. If your only useing the collar for his tags, then yes, the rolled leather collar is the best. It may not be very "trendy", but most times you can't see it for all the hair anyway.

Jesse has a plain flat leather collar (well, it's actually studded, but the studs aren't very spiked LOL). It works find for him, he has a lot of hair around his neck and Calgal's right..you can't see the collar on long coated breeds anyway so fashion generally takes a backseat even if you don't want it too.
The rolled leather ones are ugly, for sure, but I agree that they are great for our breeds. If I could find one small enough Jesse would have one too. Cass. |

Yep the rolled leather ones are the best, used to use them years ago on our Rough Collies and use them nowadays on my Spanish. I've never found anything better for coated breeds.

I love the collars made by canine equipment http://www.canineequipment.com/technika_hardwear.html
or mes amis http://www.everythinggolden.com/new_page_3.htm those collars are a type of nylon, but they feel like satin. They just slide over the hair and don't matt it up. I also like that they come in so many nice collars. |

On my GSDs I used a rolled (round) leather collar and that worked well. I don't know what a fursavers is but I bet it's meant especially for that. You might look it up or maybe D. Schaferhund has a photo?

a fursaver is a huge linked, chokecollar, but you can flip the collarend arround and fixate the links, so it is not choking.
Here is a pick, and it really is the best.IMO. When you buy one make sure it is not one of the very light ones, they are crap, best if they are a little heavy in your hand. They have even special ones when your dog has skin problems- non alergen ones. They have different sizes, too. ![]() |
