dry skin and weather?

can the weather give dogs dry skin like it can humans?

Kinos never had dry skin before, so im assuming its not his food as weve fed him the same kind quite a while now.

But since its gotten cold and we have the heat on ALL night (not my choice) hes been itching and dry latley.
I have been too, I alwyas get dry and itchey when the house I live in has forced hot air (rather then water warmed heaters).

so is it possible for Kino to be having the same reaction to the heated house as I do?

He loves the cold outside! he hates comming in the house.

Human dandruff and doggy dandruff are two completely different things. (Which is why you can't use human dandruff shampoo on dogs.) I'm really tired so this could all be wrong, but I believe human dandruff is actual dry skin and doggy dandruff is dander. I just bought Duke a bag of Eagle Pack Holistic today just as a supplement. It says it's good for the skin and coat. Although I can't remember the exact ingredients that were listed, they weren't too bad. He gets California Natural, but I decided to give him a little more variety. He also gets fatty acid capsules, and use to get Lipiderm and yogurt. I went to the groomer's about a month ago and asked what I should use to help with the dandruff, and she recommended conditioner. (I was actually only there looking at all of the Herm Sprenger chains they had on sale, but I decided I better invest in a better quality shampoo for him. Plus the woman was looking at me like I was nuts. ) I got the MinkSheen pet shampoo, here's the website: http://www.touchofmink.com/ Not only is it a shampoo, conditioner, and bug-repellant, but it smells great too!

Now for an easier and simpler answer to your question, I think a humidifier is in order for your house.

Oh, I'm sure the dry conditions inside when we have our heat going can make them have dryer skin. You can put a big pot of water on low heat on the stove and let some moisture into the air. BUT don't forget about it and let it run out and start your house on fire! LOL. (well...NO. not lol) Anyhow, that or a humidifier. A little vegetable oil in the food, just a tad can help or fish or flax oil if your dog isn't allergic. I think too much bathing is not a good idea even if it is good shampoo. But we all need to bathe them sometimes. They can get stinky. Anyhow...just some ideas.

Oh, I have used something I had for the horses called Show Sheen. It's a spary and it's very nice feeling. You can get it in a feed store. I'm not sure how much moisture it puts into them, but it makes them shiny. It's not too oily either.

I have the same trouble in the winter with my dogs and yep, I use a humidifier as well as adding extra fish oil to their daily diet and a leave in conditioner spray for their coat.

I agree with you on we shouldn't use each others shampoo.
But one day I wanted do do a little research on hair and came across this thing. Top ten hair legens and it siad that most peopel think our dandriff is from dry skin but it is a bad desise(sp) or something and you should ask your doctor.

Any way this is on dogs. LOL

I figured I had it backwards. So then doggy dandruff is actual dry skin, and human dandruff has nothing to do with a dry scalp.
Now I think I have it right.
