Smelly breath
My puppyy is losing his puppy breath and its being replaced with smelly dog breath. I want to brush his teeth (without toothpaste, of course) but when I try and get close to his mouth with the toothbrush, he freaks out. I havent sen him act so wild ever before. Why is this? And what is a good way to make his breath better?

The best way I find to clean dog's teeth is the way they used to do it in the wild - by reeding raw bones, chicken carcuses etc - as they rip and the meat off and crunch on the tougher parts they are cleaning their teeth at the same time as eating.
River gets either a bone or carcus once a week and he's never had a problem with his breath (and his teeth are still SUPER white at 14 months). Carrots are also meant to be good for "flossing" their teeth as they eat. If you want some advice on what bones are safe for your pup (I'm not sure what breed your pup is and how old it is) perhaps ask your vet for some suggestions. Also the lower quality dog food you feed usually means the worse your dog's breath will smell so this could be something else to look into. |

Start out slowly. Use a moistened fingerbrush or gauze wrapped around your finger to get your pup use to having things put in his mouth.
I use a minty toothpaste made only for dogs. The only drawback is that they love the taste soo much that they chew a little on my fingers & brush. I have to admit, I'm not the best at brushing their teeth so I'm thinking of trying a raw bone like Rivsky mentioned. |

Why are you trying to get his mouth to close on the brush? I'm not sure I could get Darby to do that and I've been brushing his teeth since I got him. I guess it would go quicker, maybe? with a closed mouth but the idea never occurred to me. (hehe now I may have to try).

I hate brushing a dog's teeth.
I suggest raw turkey necks that are still frozen...working on that will make his teeth go **PING**... ![]() |

I would find some toothpaste the dog likes (we use Triple Pet vanilla mint--I love the smell too!) and then put a dab on your finger and let the dog lick it off. Then put some more on it and start putting your finger on the teeth (some people use a finger toothbrush or guaze, I just use my fingers. Yucky. lol). You can do a few sessions of that and start a brushing motion with your fingers. Then once the doggie accepts that you can do that whole routine with a toothbrush instead of your finger.
One of my dogs still hates it, but I'm able to brush his teeth fine. Missie is pretty good about it all the time. I'd really like to use the raw bones, but I'm not sure where to get them, and I'm pretty easily grossed out when it comes to meat and such, so it's hard for me. ![]() |

Try charcoal dog biscuits or chews....... but like you say if it is a bad tooth then unfortunately nothing will effectively work.
Just an idea - could it be digestive? Sometimes bad smells will eminate from the stomach. |

I go to the local butcher/meat processor and get beef marrow bones. They work great in getting that junk off their teeth, and keeping the breath at a tolerable smell. Not to mention keeping them occupied.....I pay about 50 cents a pound...not bad, and they love it!

Yes, the beef marrow bones (also called femur bones) are wonderful for chewing on. They can't actually eat or splinter those bones but their teeth and jaws get a great work-out because all dogs love those bones. If you have a small dog, as the butcher to cut the femur bone into 1" or 2" pieces.

I would highly recommend getting your dog used to you touching/moving his mouth even if you don't plan to brush the dog's teeth!
It is a good idea to check your dog's mouth regularly, and this is much easier to do if they are comfortable with having their mouth handled. It can also make giving medication easier and it makes the vet's job MUCH easier! My terrier was a rescue and he does not like his mouth handled, he will tolerate me handling it usually but not the vet. This means when there was a suspected problem with his mouth the vet could not get a good look without putting him under anesthesia... |

dry brushing your dog's teeth daily is very effective in keeping away bad breath. but if your dog really freaks out at the sight of it, don't force it on him. if he does allow, do it softly. maybe u hurt him so now he's scared, or maybe he's scared just for no reason
(very possible). get some chew sticks and synthetic bones for your dog to chew. they're very good at keeping your dog's teeth clean as well as keeping away boredom. they're also good for the health of the teeth of the dog since a dog's teeth are meant to chew on bones and other hard stuff |
