Tear Stains
Ripley's tear stains have gotten terrible as of late, and it's really getting irritating to me, since I obsess over my dogs' hygeine.
![]() I've tried quite a few things in an attempt to get rid of them, and nothing so far has worked. I wipe underneath his eyes several times daily, I've tried the "tear clear" things they sell at the pet stores.. And they're just not going away! Any suggestions on how to clear them up? |

Here are some links that may help you:
http://www.homestead.com/bulldogsworld/tear.html http://www.bhejei.com/groom-stains.htm http://www.allsands.com/Pets/Dogs/ma...sta_wee_gn.htm Mostly they deal with dogs like Malteses, because they are prone to tear stains a lot, but I thought the information in these articles were helpful regardless of breed. |

My little buff cockapoo has the same tear stains. When it first showed up, it looked like her eye was bleeding onto the fur on her face, since the stain is reddish. Since then, it's stained down even more. Lol, at first I thought this was part of her natural coloring coming out. I'm also looking for answers. Is there anyway to remove the stain once there? Since she's still a pup, we haven't bathed her yet, so I don't know if a good shampoo will help to lighten these stains. I just read one of the sites posted by Labluver, and I think I'll try the tums and the peroxide paste. Later I'll read the other 2 sites. Good luck with Ripley.
P.S some dark furred dogs must also have the same problem, but it just doesn't show up like on our light furred dogs. |

I didn't read the articles but I read somewhere that bad breeding often leads to tear stains, especially Poodles. I think there's something about almond eyes that allows proper tear flow and round eyes block the tear flow creating stains
It's something like that. So, my guess is that it's possible that Ripley's byb background could play a role in his tear stains. And since you, gracie, stated that your dog is a Cocker Spaniel/Poodle mix, my guess is that she has the same problem (round eyes-bad breeding). |

Yes, my cockapoo does have little round eyes. Little beady ones at that, LOL. She didn't start out with tears or stains in her first few months. The stain started to show up when she was 5 months old or so. My older dog (ShihTzu and lapso mix breed) also has a lot of tearing but since her coat is parti color and dark around her eyes, the stain doesn't show up as it does on my buff. In the past I tried antibiotic drops because I thought she had an infection, but they didn't help. I had the Vet look at the little one's eyes, and the Vet told me this is normal for her breed. So, I guess it's up to me, to keep the area clean, and work with it in the best way I can. I have yet to try the suggestions posted. (I'm slow, Lol) I guess there really is no instant magic cure, but deligent work on my part.

It's a good thing to remember that reputable breeders often won't have teary lines. Bichons and Poodles come to mind. So do Maltese. My guess is that Ripley's background came back to bite him in the arse (eyes, LOL), and consequently, he has tear stains. I don't think you can do much to fix that. I've heard that eye drops and bleach-y type products don't work. Good Luck and give Ripley a smooch on that tear stained face for me

i've read that giving the dog apple cidar vinegar on a daily basis will help get rid of tear staining, but i don't know if it's true or not. i like acv anyway. lots of trace minerals.

I have read also that giving more green vegetables will help. I don't know how true it is, but I think it would be worth a shot.
My older Shih Tzu had what I thought were tear stains, I tried a few products that were supposed to help. I brought her to the vet and she said they weren't tear stains, it was her coloring. I should have figured it out myself, the color is the same as her mothers fur. |

My sheltie Jake has always had tear stains. When he was a pup, the vet said that it was due to his head growing and changing shape and that they will vanish when he gets older. But now, he is 5 years old and thy are still there, but sometimes worse than others - i find that after he has eaten quite a dry food, his eyes will water quite a bit. It is weird, but the vet said it is nothing to worry about, and that is is quite commen for dogs to get it.

My parents Red Heeler/Rottweiler mix, Buster, has always had tear stains problems. Seems like they're worse in the summertime.

Hi Guys,
I thought my ekie would never get rid of her stains...I tried everything I could find and was starting to think it was hopeless. Then, I tried Rolaids and they cleared up in three days and have never come back! A rolaid/tum/other calcium indigestion chewable thingy every day seems to work like a charm! I think you should try this before springing for expensive foods and supplements, antibiotic drugs, and putting chemicals on the dogs eyes. Not only is it cheaper but its definately a less complicated solution to this persistant problem! Hope this helps! Shaun Melissa Rathy |
