My dog pepe has some god-awful dandruff where her fr has just come back, and this is fine, and is slowly going away with washes, but I cant seem to wash her head without getting water in her ears, any suggestions?

yes, the common practice is, with one hand, using the thumb and middle finger, grasp the dog's head, folding the ear flaps over the opening of the ears, keeping a firm grip...with the other hand wash the head, moving around your hand. Rinse, and dry the area around the ears before releasing, then dry the rest.

ok, thanks. And while I'm at it, do you know how to get mat out? Rocky has some serious mat going on, but I cant get it out with a brush without pulling his hair.

you dont have to cut the whole coat, just the mat, im going to assume is behind the ears or in selected areas, just snip that part out, its hardly noticable, and grows back in just fine, and quite quickly also.

my pom Rocky had some horrible mats behind his ears and on his butt when i got them.. we tried brushing them out, and when that didnt work we cut them out. we couldnt even tell that he was missing any hair and he felt much better because it wasnt pulling on his skin. then brushing every day... although i get lazy.. and with working so much i cant do it every day, but as often as you can is best. and as for baby powder, you put it behind the ears and it absorbs the excess oil that causes the mats.

So you just hold the ear flaps closed, and keep the head steady so no water drips in there? That's very helpful. Jinx has never had his head washed cuz I was so afraid of getting water in there. I know how bad an ear infection can hurt!

I don't worry too much about getting a little water in the ears. My Lab swims and sometimes puts her whole head under water (to get frog's eggs)LOL....gross. Anyhow, if a little gets in, just dry it out afterward and you can even put a drop of two of rubbing alcohol in there and swab it with a cotton ball before the dog shakes so as not to let it flip out into the eyes. That helps dry them. I use to be a major swimmer and that's what we did too. LOL. Ususally if a lot of water gets in there, it will drain out on it's own when the dog is lying down.

I know what you mean about the mats. I had a Himilayan cat and he'd get terrible. I'd brush him and brush him and there would be one little spot that I didn't notice and in a matter of a few days....a-k-k-k a mess. It's hard to see where the mat starts and where the skin ends. It looks all the same if the hair is the color of the skin. It's really easy to cut the dog's skin. So, if you have some electric clippers that will work, that's the safest. My horse clippers wouldn't work on that cat. I had to take him to the groomers.

Its reccomended that while bathing a dog you put a cotton ball in each ear.
