Silly putty in dog fur, what do I use?
So Samantha found the silly putty in my Christmas decorations, not sure why it was in there but she figured out how to make a mess with it.
Poor Hank sat on some of it and I need to get it out. I did a little research online and found info on PAM cooking spray, hand sanitizer and WD-40 used to get it out of kids hair and clothing. Not really interested in using WD-40 on Hank but I don't have either the PAM or hand sanitizer, so what would you do? I guess I could shave it off.... PS - The putty is really stuck in there and it changed colors after was in his fur, it's kind of a yellow/green. |

Always room for one more

Hehe. I remember the first time I left Missie home alone all day she got into BRIGHT pink silly putty, and it was on her and all over the carpet! That was 8 years ago now so I can't remember how I got it out, unfortunately.
I would try things similar to PAM--maybe butter or oil? If those don't work I'd just shave/cut it out. Better for him to be missing some hair than to get skin irritation from different formulas! Hehe! |

I'd probably just try and trim the fur to get it out. The fur will grow back, and it'll be a lot easier than trying all kinds of things that probably won't end up working anyway. LOL

I don't know about silly putty, but I remember reading somewhere about how to get bubble gum out (same kind of consistancy right?) and I believe ice cubes were used, I could be wrong, but it might be worth a shot.

Thanks for all suggestions.
I got it out last night. I searching the house for an oil that I'd be comfortable letting him lick off, you know edible stuff. I used the coconut oil I use for cooking...worked like a charm. I just massaged the oil into the putty and started pulling chunks out with a paper towel. It's funky who easy is was. Then I just used a fine toothed comb the get the bits out and voula "putty dog" is fixed! I just procrastinated in giving him a bath after the oil and the poor bugger buried himself in dirt in our yard trying to get his new "scent" off. I guess he really hates coconut oil smell. He was covered in dirt, up the nose, in the mouth, in his eyes...I felt horrible. So we gave him a quick bath and he's back to normal. The coconut oil came out with just regular shampoo. I was surprised how easy it was. Poor Hank! |

The oils really do the trick with gum or silly putty in the hair. It also works on tar that's stuck on your car. The oil makes things too difficult to stick together. I have also used peanut butter on a few ocassions when my grown kids were little.

I though of peanut butter too, but it's so much thicker than the coconut oil, so I used the coconut oil. Maybe Hanks would have preferred to smell like peanuts than coconut
![]() Ahhh, tar too. Thanks for the tip. |
