About tear stains

Poodles have some of the worst tear stains.I have groomed dogs for 11 yrs.now and i have worked for a vet for the last 14yrs.I dont know of any product for tear stains that really works.Sometimes a bad diet makes it worse. It is best to keep the hair very short around the eyes. And i have read about using rolaids but no one knows what the side affects of long term use could be and i'm sure there would be some. I've also read that somewhere. One once a day I believe? I'd look into it more before actually trying it, but I *think* it takes that redness away. I know I read Rolaids, tear stains, redness... I just forgot some of the more important inbetween details.

Nevvvermind. The Rolaids suggestion is indeed in the link that the ever so diligent Crossfire posted.

Yess!! use the rolaids. I used them with my eskie for two weeks and they went away and never came back. There wasn't any upset or side affects, either. Just give your dog one a day every day and watch the tears dissappear (of course the rolaids don't actually get the stains out of the coat lol., they stop the red tears from causing them)

FurSuccess, is there a recommended dosage per weight for dogs, or is it just one calcium antacid tablet a day, no matter the weight?

So, if Rolaids stop the tears from staining, then what ingredient in the Rolaid do you think the dog was lacking in? This is very interesting! If you could find that magic ingredient, you could invent the magic pill and market it!

Calgal, the antacid tablets change the pH of either the dog's system or their tears.... or maybe both! I can't remember exactly. It is said that the red tear stains are a result of yeast, so my guess is that the yeast do not survive with the altered pH levels.

If you want to get rid of the stains as well, you might try Diamond Eye. We use it on our Pem and it seems to work pretty well.

i give one tablet a day for my mini eskie...shes about 12 or 13 pounds. I suppose if your dog is a bit smaller you could split one.
The rolaids change the ph of your dogs tears. The yeast causing the stains cannot survive in this new ph. Voila! no more yeast and no more stains.
I just snip out the stained fur and wait for the mark to grow in...I'm a groomer so I guess this might be easier for me than for others lol...
I haven't seen any side effects at all from using rolaids to clear up tear stains. If they come back just start giving them again- I usually do a round twice a year for about 2 weeks at a time.
good luck!

Shaun

Shaun, my dog weighs 62lbs, so I don't think I'll be giving any halves.

I have some tear stain solution but I have never noticed an improvement after applying it. I can try it again, and see if it has an effect after multiple applications.
