Poodle Hair Curly and then Not?
Hello Everyone:
I am new to this site. I hope that someone here can help me with my question. I rescued a standard poodle puppy who was not in the best health. I had given her poodle feet and saw that her feet were mis-shapen because the lady kept her in sand. She was only about 5 or 6 weeks old. So, I thought that I should go ahead and shave her to see what the rest of her looked like. Now, she had curly hair that was about 2-3 inches long when I shaved her and now that it is growing back she doesn't. It is very straight. What has gone wrong? Will she ever have her beautiful hair again? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks. Andrea |

Her curls will return.
Poodle puppy hair is very soft and is actually more of a soft wave/curl. As she gets older her hair will become courser and the curls tighter. I keep both of mine in a short clip but when they come home from the groomer they are brushed out with hardly any curl at all. As time goes on the curl will naturally return to their hair. I do keep their ears brushed out but leave their body hair in the curls. Congrats on your new furpal & bless you for giving her a loving home! ![]() |

My little cockapoo which has a very curley poodle coat, started out with straight to wavy hair, now has such a curly dense coat that I wish would go back to being straighter. She is now slightly over a year, so I don't know if the coat she has now, is what will remain as is.

Thanks For Calming My Nerves!!!!
THANK YOU ALL FOR YOU HELP. I WAS TOLD THAT BECAUSE I SHAVED HER BEFORE SHE WAS SIX MONTHS OLD, HER HAIR WOULD NEVER BE CURLY. I JUST FOUND THAT HARD TO BELIEVE. I HAVE BEEN A DOG GROOMER FOR 6 YEARS AND NEVER HEARD OF THAT. I WAS CONCERNED. I ALSO HAVE NEVER OWNED A POODLE BEFORE. I HAVE GROOMED MANY ADULT POODLES, BUT I DON'T REMEMBER GROOMING ANY PUPPY POODLES. I WAS JUST UPSET WITH MYSELF THAT I MIGHT HAVE RUINED HER HAIR. I TRUST YOUR WORD IS RIGHT. HER HAIR IS STIFF AND WAVY. I HOPE IT TURNS CURLY. I ALSO RESCUED A 2 YEAR OLD WHITE MALE. NOW, TALK ABOUT GORGEOUS!!!!!! HE IS AWESOME. I JUST HOPE THAT EMMA ENDS UP AS WONDERFUL AS HIM. I LOVE THEM BOTH!!! THANKS AGAIN!!!

Ok, someone explain the "shaving before 6 months" things to me. you arent doing anything to the actual root of the hair, so what does shaving it have to do with making it stay straight. Im no groomer, so it could be a blantantly obvious answer, but right now it seems like the whole "if you shave your leg hair, it grows back thicker" myth.

I think she was told wrong. Scooter got shaved at about 3 mounths and his coat is a lot curlyer(sp?lol) It also depends on how much you brush them is you brush them a couple times a week it will stay curly. If you brush them a couple times a day it will be straighter.
