Ahh! HELP!! (Fleas)
Well my Saint, Saydi, has a bad case of fleas. Since her old masters kept her outside or in the basement she has a lot, they aren't like everywhere but I've seen 2 already and that's all I need to see. Anyone have any suggestions that will kick these fleas right out the door and make sure they will not come back. I'm willing to splurge my allowance on her to make sure she gets rid of them but I want to get a product that is proven to work on large dogs such as Saydi.

Hi
the easiest way to get rid of them is with a spot on flea treatment, i had very good experiences in that said case with, exspot/defend. But every other spot on treatment with permethrin will do it. When you use it the fles die, and one really important thing is to let the dog go where it used to go all the time, so he can "pick up" all the fleas all over. Additional to that you can spray the preferdefd areas, but I didn't do it and we got rid of the fleas fast. you have to do it not just once do a atleast one package of a spot on treatment (6month) That should get rid of them... good luck |

Advantage!!!! You don't have to spray the yard or your pet's sleeping areas and I guarantee it works. I have even had the experience with it of putting it on every 45 days instead of every 30 days and it worked fine. I have even used Frontline and I don't feel it worked as good as the Advantage. how much does she weigh? the largest frontline i think goes up to 132 lbs.
get a flea collar and put it in the bag of your vacuum and run it very frequently as well as treating the dog. that'll help. |

We just got Advantage for Chance and I noticed the difference right away. He's at 50 pounds, at least now. (I know the St. will be a lot more than that, but just pointing out that he isn't a small pup!)

Yep, Frontline only goes up to 132. We always used the Frontline anyway by going with the largest and then an additional puppy dose and applied Seven dust as well, it seemed to do the job and the dust didn't cause a problem with the Frontline. The dust may have changed over the years though on its potency so I'd check first before using it with the Frontline.
Putting the dust in the vacum always gave that extra push as well. |

Frontline Plus works better for our dogs than Advantage. But those are the two big names that I know work well.
Good luck kicking those fleas out the door. |

I'd recommend Frontline Plus. I also have a Saint, and that's what she gets. She gets about 6 little bottles at once. She plays in open fields where other dogs run, and has never had fleas.
Besides treating your dog directly, and repeatedly, it is also wise to take care of the house. Clean her bedding, and other areas. Fleas like to hide in places like couch cushions and rugs... so vacuum everywhere... and repeat. You want to make sure you get any adult fleas and any eggs that might later develop. I hope she is flea-free soon! |

This may sound off the wall but it's the cheapest form of heartworm and flea control there is. Just go to your nearest tractor supply or feed and grain store and get a tube of equine worm paste, the kind with ivermectin and give your dog about 1/2 tsp for each 50 pounds of weight once a month. It is tasteless and easy to give just squeeze it onto your finger and wipe it on the roof of your dog's mouth. You will never have heartworm or fleas problems again. The tube costs about $15 and will last at least six months for a large dog.
Word of warning, do not use Ivermectin on collies or Shelties. SheltieMama |

I use the new Frontline Combo which seems to work well on both my Cats and my dog.
I have seen Advantage drops at my vets but never thought about buying, never really thought to ask about it either whether it was as good as the Frontline but im sure it is, another good product that helps with Ticks is Stronghold, we use this on my dog and cats too. |

Advantage = sick dogs
I just wanted to let you know I did use Advantage. My dog was very sick several times. We didn't know it was from using the flea drops. She was all shakey and acting strange. She looked like she was stoned. She was very jumpy and nervous looking. We thought she ate something in the yard. It was so sad to see her sick. We had taken her to our vet and to the emergency vet. They couldn't tell me what was wrong. They gave her a shot. She then seemed fine after about an hour. My agility trainer told us how some dogs get sick from the drops. Looking back she was always sick after I put the drops on her. We have now changed to Frontline Plus. Emma hasn't been sick. So just keep your eyes open for side effects. I have read on the web that Advantage has killed some cats and made some dogs very sick.
I just hope other dogs never get the way Emma was. It was very scary. It really made me mad the vets never asked me about flea drops or made me aware of the side effects. |
