Hi Jackie and welcome to GP.

This could be for a few reasons. One, lots of poodles don't mature into their adult hair until they are around 2 years of age and still can have the soft straighter hair that puppies have. And the second reason is genetics. If any of her parents or descendants have soft, straight hair then chances are she will inherit the same. Either way I bet she’s a cutie, make sure to post pictures of her.

I have a cockapoo and her hair is way too curley. It's obvious she took after her poodle ancestor. I've always had dogs with straight or wavy hair, so I find her coat hard to deal with. To explain, her coat is that of a perm with minature tight curls. She is close to a year and a half. I wish her coat would loosen up and not be so curley. I wonder if this can still happen? When we brought her home at 8 weeks, she had wavy hair. After her first haircut, it sprung into a mass of tight curls.

Gracie, you are right - your pup seems to have inherited her hair from the poodle side. When poodles are pups their hair is definitely softer and more of a wave than a curl. As they mature it takes on a curlier appearance and a harder feel to it. I have 2 standard poodles and both are curly although Chloe's has a softer feel to it than Farley's. One way you can somewhat loosen the curl and give it a softer feel is to use one of the hair conditioners that you can get at a pet supply store.

The poodles that you see in shows who look as tho they don't have all those curls are really hard to maintain - it is a ton of brushing that gets that look. I keep mine in a short clip as you can see from my avatar and it is very easy to maintain as long as I have them clipped about every 8 wks.
