Anal sacs
I was wondering if anyone can give me instructions of how to empty anal sacs. I have found instructions on some of the websites but i am not sure if i should follow it... (A rag or tissue is held up to the anus and both sides of the anal area are squeezed.)
Is there any dangour to empty anal sacs your self? or should it be left for the vets? |

Can you maybe have your vet show you? I know a lot of people do it themselves... but probably having an expert show you how would be good for the first time.

it is hard to tell you how you have to watch someone do it... if your baby goes to a groomer taker her their and ask them to show you how... it isnt pretty though it is gross and it can also impact them...however it is possible but much better to watch than to go off words
hugs hope that helps |

A healthy dog with consistently firm stools should not need the anal sacs expressed. IMO once it has been done it needs to be done more frequently.
My golden retriever never needed to have this done until he was a senior dog, but once it had been done once it needed to be done on a regular basis. A reputable vet or groomer even who is knowledgeable will tell you in most cases it does not need to be done. Firm stools evacuate the sacs naturally. |

One thing I will say is to NOT ignore them. Max's ruptured (sp??), and we almost lost him over it. It took some time to recover. Your vet/groomer should be able to show you how to do it.

This is a medical procedure and you should ask your vet if it is something he can show you. The Vet may adivse against you doing it. Like other have said, done wrong and your dog can get sick or badley infected.
I would advise you to discuss with your vet. My Pug has a problem with her glands and my groomer won't do it for us. Our Vet was happy about that. He has reduce the rate for us since we were paying a lot of money to have it done for her on a regualar basics. My dog has firm stools and still has a problem with it. My Vet beleive she will grow out of it - but you never know. |

Groomers only do it from the outside, which isn't the best way to do it. I'd have your vet show you or do it for you. I do anal glands all the time at work, yet I can't do Chloe's because she has (according to the vet) anatomically "weird" glands. They are placed weird and hard to express.
It took me quite a few times to learn how to do it and it still isn't easy. You can rupture them or cause an infection, so your best bet is to bring the dog into the vet to have thme done. PS - Chloe's poo is firm and she's healthy, some dogs can't empty them on their own... |

Tiva had an infected anal gland and when my vet went to try and empty it it ruptered. It was absessed, this happened twice and it swelled fast... We cleaned it up real good and she is well now....
I had my vet show me and the way she showed me was by the inside. I use latex gloves, ky jelly and toilet paper lots of it and you can feel them on the inside and u gently slide ur finger and they release. I have to put some pressure on hers cause hers are like a paste pretty thick. It took my vet about 15 minutes of showing me till I got it right and now I do it with no problem have been for about 4 years now I think. When I see her scooting her butt I know its time.... She never showed me how to do it from the outside and you prolly get a better idea and no what ur doing when doing it from the inside. Even when she had to do my big dog it was from the inside.....I would think from doing it from the outside you would prolly hurt them more or cause damage because the anal sacs are located on both sides of their bum... http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_anal_sacs.html http://www.cah.com/dr_library/ansac.html |

I called the vet office, and it cost $80 just to have her anal sacs emptied! 50 for office visit fee. However the nurse told me that since she havent been scooting or licking her rare end in the last 2 weeks shes probably fine and that i should bring her in when she starts to scoot, stare or lick again.
Is it possible to get it from a pet grooming place for cheaper price? |

$80 seems pretty pricy. It only takes like 30 seconds... I would call around, even to other vets.
