I give my american cocker spaniel a bath every two weeks. She gets dirty and ratty looking...
Chi's don't have that long hair, though. 2-3 times a year is probably perfectly fine. |

Dogs have natural skin oils and most breeds do not need to be bathed more than once a month. However, if your dog is especially oily, it is an entirely acceptable option to dry shampoo the dog or bathe at a maximum of twice a month. I bathe my Pekingese every three weeks, whereas I bathe my Greyhound four times a year. Chis are very similar to Greys in the sense that they are both smooth coated and have a very thin layer of fur. Thus, I'd suggest bathing no more than six times a year.

Delsi, my Chi gets a bath about every couple of months. My two yorkies however have to be bathed once a week. I suppose it all depends on the dog, as to how dirty or oily they get and how often. You can sprinkle baking soda on the dog, work it all in the hair and then brush out. It cleans the hair and gets rid of doggie odor. This may be helpful if you have really cold winters and don't want to take a chance at stripping the natural oils that help keep them warm.

My dog is going on 6 and never had a bath with shampoo. She's been in a tub once to get hosed off in the spring when she got especially muddy, but otherwise nothing. Best thing is, she doesn't smell doggy or stinky at all so why bother.

I bathe mine once a week normally. If I get busy it's every two weeks. She gets dirt in her long hair very easily and well "back there" gets pretty dirty too. So she needs to be bathed regularly. If you do bathe that frequently make sure the shampoo doesn't strip the coat.

I have a dacshund/chihuahua mix and I bathe her every couple months. She's got kind-of thick hair, but she's not very stinky. So we only bathe her when she REALLY needs it!

I think it depends alot on the type of dog...if they are outside a lot, etc. etc. I have had different types of dogs (I am 47) and some needed baths more than others. I now have a mini poodle and she needs a haircut every two weeks because she needs a haircut that often . I also have a mini schnauzer who gets a bath as often as the poodle only because she gets jealous of the poodles getting the attention. However, she really doesn't NEED a bath that often. I would just make sure that their skin isn't getting dry or flakey. Just be sure to use a good dog shampoo with a conditioner in it.

I think I'll have to bathe mine once a week or so. With his fur it really holds in the smells and after a week he stinks!
On a similar vein ~ When should I bring him to get clipped? I noticed his paws are quite long and whatnot... In the book I have it says you can trim your Shih Tzu paws yourself, but it seems a little daunting to me. What if I accidently cut his pad???? ![]() Hard to work myself up to being brave to go near him with anything sharp. He's so wiggly that it's hard to get him to settle down enough to clip anything. |
