I bought a 5 month old miniature pinscher and he has been wheezing ecspecially when he gets excited-never vomits though. He also has bloody diarrhea most of the time. when I get up about 5:30 in the mornings he is usually wheezing and as soon as he starts that I have to take him straight outside cause his bloody poop follows that every morning. Usually doesnt do any wheezing except when he gets out of the crate and when he needs to poop. I don't know much about dogs but the breeder said he was all caught up on his wormings. Could this be worms or does anybody have any ideas? p.s. Yes I am taking him to the vet tommorrow but was just wondering?

um Im not a vet so I have no idea what it could be but id have to say the vet is a very important thing. I have two Min Pins and the younger one will wheeze a bit, but I think its from drinking too fast, or when they play she will...but if he has bloody poop then something internal is seriously wrong. May be some sort of hemmoriging, or a laceration some place....he needs to be checked out.

I do hope your baby is ok. Let us know. That bloody diarrhea would make me nervous too. Did he eat anything weird or scratchy. My Chihuahua ate a pigs ear once and made her like that to the extreme. I was worried sick. She got better and I never gave my dogs anything like that again.
The wheezing could be allergies or if it's more like gasping, it could be the trachea collapsing. My Chihuahuas do that when they get excited and I just massage the throat and they overcome it. It's apparently common in several toy breeds. But ask your vet. Hope all will right itself. Carrie |

Could it be Kennel cough maybe? I would definately take in a fresh poop sample with you when you go to the vet. It could still be a parisite.
I do hope all is well and nothing serious, wish you the best ![]() |

This is a situation that requires immediate vet care. Sorry but bloody stools can be signs of very very serious illness (I hope not). Wheezing especially while pooping could indicate there is some pain or anxiety associated with the act.
Good advice to bring stool sample - also watch for long strings of snot (real attractive) out of nostrils. This is what Ariels respiratory infection looked like and it required antibotic. Good luck and my best wishes for a minor alignment. |

This sounds to me like Hemmoratic Gastro Enteritis... (HGE)....Just a big name for a problem involving an upset of the entire digestive system, intestinal track onward and out-There are a bunch of different causes... Parasits, to many goodies, especially things like pig ears, ect..(fatty treats) or just being a puppy it's possible he ingested something he shouldn't- sometimes the cause can't even be detected-I am not a vet and that's were you need to go because dehydration is a concern here especially for a puppy- I don't think it is kennel cough because with kennel cough you do have regurgation of a watery phelm.
I have had my share of experences with HGE....when my 1st schnauzer (Alleigh) was also 5 months old she not only had bloody stool but started to also vomit blood, she came from the top breeder of black mini's in the country also current on all shots and wormings-never was there a diagnoises of how or why but they called it HGE- after some investigating (long story) I truely believe it was from a horrific parasite infestion! I must add here I purchased her at the age of 5 months from the breeder and had only had her home for 2 weeks when this mushroomed!! Then once again, my 2nd schnauzer O.D. on pig ears. She would steal everyone's hide them, then go off and eat them all at once- and I thought she was just a slow chewer, that is untill I set her up -- savoring every last bite!! --yea right- anyway, bloody stool, overnight at vets, fluids... back to normal--HGE!-- (she is soooo bad!!) There have been a few more but you get the idea, HGE--There are a few diseases however, coccidiosis being one of them that do have symptoms that do include bloody stool, but as yet you have none of the other symptoms present- So have him checked out and definetly bring a fresh stool sample. Just remember-Just because one sample comes back negative --IT DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE PARASITE FREE-- they may have just not shed or got caught in the sample at that particular time. Back to Alleigh, and this is truely why I believe it was parasites, after I started to worm her every 6 month regardless- her bloody stool went away for good!!??- As far as the weezing, that's had to tell without witnessing it - I don't know the breed well enough, it may or may not be linked with the bloody stool?? I don't think so-- Don't panic yet- If he is eating and drinking and playing things can't be all that bad...yet! -Please let us know how you and he make out- We will include you in our prayers.... moonstar- |

BAD NEWS The vet said that Chester had Heartworms. Almost everything that I have every heard about Heartworms is that they are not prone to this parasite until the age of one. What do ya'll think. Should I get a second opinion even though he is being treated? p.s. Why didnt she check his feces? I took it in?? |

If you took the stool in....I am sure they will test it. I would call and just ask. Sometimes they fall behind on stool samples.
As far as the heartworm test.......if they drew blood from your pup. Then 'yes' the heartworm test would be accurate. I would be on the phone fast as lightening to the breeder! I am sorry! I am glad you found out right away! Thank you for going to the vet! |

oh yeah I called the breeder the day I found out this was wrong or at the time "something" was wrong. She said Chester and his sister sleep on chedar chips and that he probably ate some. That could have been true but I so did not believe that. He is 5 months old and just now probably ate some. Yeah right lady! oops sry about spelling
