Stupid treatment for demodectic mange
I am really upset, today I found this website while researching information about demodectic mange for our foster puppy. I don't know if I am allowed to post the actual website, so I will just quote the section that really made me mad...
![]() "The easiest and most inexpensive treatment to kill the mites on dogs that are kept outdoors, and heal minor bacterial infections is a two part treatment. First, bathe the mange infected dog with an inexpensive dog shampoo or dishwashing liquid detergent while using a firm, bristle brush to scrub off any scabs or scaly skin. Second, dip a rag in used automobile motor oil and generously apply the oil to the infected area along with the surrounding hair. DO NOT get the oil in the dogs ears or eyes. This treatment will kill the mites that are causing the hair loss/bacterial skin infections, is safe to use on your dog, and the used motor oil acts as a moisturizer to help stop itching. This treatment will work in 98% of all mange infected animals, especially those without any major bacterial skin infections." This motor oil treatment is an old wives tale!! As stated in a reputable veterinarian site: "Some 30 years ago, dipping dogs with demodectic mange in motor oil was a popular home remedy. Skin exposure to motor oil can cause rashes and skin destruction in severe cases. The hydrocarbons can be absorbed through the skin and cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. If motor oil is licked off the coat, resultant vomiting can lead to aspiration of motor oil into the lungs and pneumonia. Kidney and liver damage can result from motor oil dipping." I can post the actual websites if it's allowed, but I'm not sure I understand the guidelines in this area. My main objection is that this guy's site shows up in the first page of results when you google for "demodectic mange". Grrr, what if someone reads this and believes it?? I sent an email to the website owner with no response as of yet. Arghhh, what else can I do? |

holy ****. People actually thought that dipping your poor dog into MOTOR OIL is a good idea?
I hope he takes that off his site, or maybe when finding better ways to treat mange you could send it to him and have him put THAT on his site, and remove the motor oil. |

GRrrr! When Lucy was diagnosed with mild Demodectic mange I got a hand out that specifically said NOT to do that and the vet also Specifically pointed out that it was an old wives tale. Lucy took some antibiotics to clear up some mild infections, and then the rest went away without formal treatment. Motor oil? Like you, Haven, I'd be afraid someone might actually believe what they read on the first page they see...especially if it's the first link on Google! Crappy.

Oh! for pete's sake, motor oil no less! Look what oil spill do to our environment...why on earth would it be a *good thing* to put that on our dogs.
Well it just goes to show you can't believe everything you read...one would hope people are more intelligent than that. |
