Kennel cough injection?
I wanted to know what people thought of the kennel cough vaccine or injection whatever it is called
. We recently went through a mild form of it with my two dogs and my 7 month old pup was the first to be exposed, thank god for robitussin DM . Anyways, I take Cai to the dog park to socialize and that is probably where he picked it up but we also go to the petco's and petsmarts where he could have came into contact with a dog who had it. However, I made the appointment to get the kennel cough done before we ever go back to these places. Now they warn you they can still get it cuz nothing is 100% but what are the chances? and are they smaller than if they went without the vaccine? Thanks all! ![]() |

I dont give kennel cough as it only covers a few of the strains of bordatella and my dogs get it anyway.... Kennel cough sounds awful .... I know the first time I ever had kennel cough was when we were away at a show in Montreal.... talk about panicked in Canada where you don't speak the language or at least I dont.... I ended up calling the 24 er clinic in Concord near where I live and they helped me out but it sounded awful (according to hubby... me I am deaf, didn't bother me at all) but robitussin took care of it so I figure if i can clear it up easilly I won't give hte vaccine..... NOW that having been said I would vaccinate an elderly dog and I likely would vaccinate very young puppies if they are exposed.

I wouldn't waste my time with it, like it was said before, it only covers I think 3 things that can cause it out of the many strains and different things that can cause it. Its a cold for a dog, big deal, I tend to think the mercury, formaldehyde, etc in the vaccine would be worse for my dog than kennel cough.

Thanks Shalva & GSD! My main concern with the kennel cough is it can turn into pneumonia, but I am assuming only if you don't catch it on time would that be correct?
. Anyways, I want to take him back to the dog park because it has made a huge impact on his social skills and we have nothing but good experiences up there. These Cattle dogs need socializing because they can have aggression issues with other dogs and are leary of people. We go up early in the morning on weekends when there are limited amounts of dogs and the owners are regulars in the early AM, it can get to crazy up there in the afternoon. That's when there are to many dogs and to many idiotic and uneducated owners . |

kennel cough can cause pneumonia which is why I thoght perhaps in older dogs or the very young, but keep in mind the vaccine itself has been known to cause kennel cough.... it might be done... but in young healthy dogs I wouldn't bother.....

I won't vaccinate any of mine for it. It's not worth it for mine. We don't go to dog parks, they are never boarded, and we don't even have a petco/petsmart to go to. And it covers so few strains of it, so chances are they'd get it anyways if they came in contact with a dog with it.

yes, there is the chance that kennel cough could turn into pneumonia, but in a healthy dog, the chances of that are very small.
the only reason i'd give it would be if i had to board or wanted to take an obedience class that required it. |
