Results are back for Bentley.

Results came back today. Bentley has a nasty bladder infection, for which he's already been on an antibiotic. BUT he also has two different crystals.. Calcium Oxylate crystals and Struvites. The vet said he does not often see both.. it's usually one or another. So now he has to be on a special diet.. (S/D) for a month, then he goes back to be checked again, and probably switched to C/D. I'm not thrilled with what the vet wants him on. If anyone has any info/tips/suggestions/questions to ask the vet, feel free to pipe up.

Aw, poor little guy. I've suffered through many UTIs personally but never had a dog with one. Had cats with them though. Hope he feels better soon.

Oh my! That is just nasty for poor Bentley.

I don't know what in their diet causes either types of crystals, but I think that I would do some research on them. Do the month on prescription food to get him on the mend, then see if you can find what causes the crystals, and see if there is another high quality food that you can put him on besides the C/D.

The vet said that foods high in Phosphorus, Potassium, and Magnesium help egg it on. I'm doing some reading, because that's what I'd really like to do.. some other food besides the c/d. Ever looked at the ingredients in the s/d food? Next to nill for nutrients.. that is why the vet told me that a dog can only be on it for a maximum of 2 months.

Have you considered putting him on "real" food instead of dog food? Would certainly take the guess work out of "what's" in it and you would have peace of mind and Bentley would love you for it.

I've thought of it... lot of research would have to go into that.. I would not want to mess up and wind up making him worse, either.

Awww poor little guy I can understand why you're cringing putting him on the S/D... did you talk at all to your vet about other options?
