Well yesterday morning I woke up to find a worm in Cai's crate that he had thrown up
. He had thrown up the morning before but I figured it was due to the salt water from the beach the day before and at that time I saw nothing but mucus. Did you get all that LOL! Anyways, he is 7 months old and has been dewormed numerous times in his earlier months so thank god it was Saturday and I immediately called my vet. I told them what happened and what I found in his crate bedding and they had me bring down a fecal sample and gave me some dewormer. I also brought in the sample worm which they were very pleased for me to share it with them . It turned out to be round worms. I asked how he could of gotten worms after being dewormed several times before. I mentioned where we walk there is horse poop on the wooded trails and he has sampled a few pieces in the past as well as geese poop, how disgusting . They said that things like that could be the cause of it. Then I thought about the raw turkey necks and some other meats I give him and asked the vet about it and they said alot of people feed raw and that wouldn't cause worms, WHEW! I got a little scared there . I just felt like such a bad mom, how did my baby get these worms? Has anyone else ever encountered anything like this before? I'll tell ya all the years I have owned dogs and this is the first time I saw a worm come out of one of them. ![]() |

Puppies seem to love to get worms.
My vet told me to alternate the worming medication with the girls so I do this. I would say poop is the way they seem to get contaminated the most. I feed my girls raw meat and have never had that problem. Glad you got it all fixed up ![]() |

To havw worms 9if it is not a bad infestation) has nothing to to with beeing a bad mom.
that happens. a lot of times they eat "worms" a lot but they don't get infected. But a little cold or a little busy imunesystem can get worms to stay in the body. That happenes. And it is ok, that's why we have wormers.... Mine had it afyter her surgeries and a lot of codein and morphium, wich just left the body weak and so the worms could find a home... Nothing to feel bad about!!! |

Raw meat and fish are soooo good for dogs that I'd hate for you to get scared of worms and stop feeding raw. There are many ways to reduce the risk though.
Round worms can also come from raw fish, maybe the goose poop had fish parts in it. To safegaurd against worms in fish meat you need to freeze it. Also try not to feed the intestines or belly meat if you choose not to freeze before feeding. Wild fish have more worms than farmed fish too. Just a thought, have you tried giving probiotics to safegaurd against intestinal parasites and pathogens? This works well with humans although we don't tend to eat goose poop either ![]() Here's a reference on raw fish and round worms: Commercial blast-freezing of third-stage Anisakis simplex larvae encapsulated in salmon and rockfish. J Parasitol. 1988 Aug;74(4):600-3. "Sixty-four fish were blast-frozen to -35 C for 15 hr to determine the effects of commercial blast-freezing on the viability of third-stage larvae of Anisakis simplex encapsulated in the muscle and viscera of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) and canary rockfish (Sebastes pinniger)." "Market-ready samples of previously blast-frozen silver salmon (O. kisutch) and chum salmon (O. keta) fillets and chum salmon steaks yielded no live worms, thereby confirming the efficacy of this process." More info here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...om_uid=3397820 PS I'm a fish biologist, that's how I know this trivial stuff |

Glad to hear you were not scared off. Fish is amazing for dogs and humans with the healthy fats, vit K, potassium, etc. Here is a great site to look up what types of fish are more ethical for us and our dogs to eat since overfishing is such a problem world-wide. Also many fish markets should tell you how the fish was caught and be open to answering questions about the fish, if not NEXT.
Here's the site to look up fishes: http://www.mbayaq.org/cr/SeafoodWatc..._regional.aspx Good luck with your worms....little buggers! |
