My Cuinn has had two seizures tonight.....

we have never had breakthrough seizures when on his meds.... I called the emergency clinic and we upped his phenobarb tonight I will call my regular vet tomm. I could really use some good positive healing thoughts and hope that its nothing more than a change in his system.

We are not sure if its a combination of stress that he is picking up from us due to losing jim our 14 year old cat, and/or the fact that he was neutered 3 weeks ago and his system is adjusting to the lack of hormones.

In either case we are really worried and could use some good thoughts.
If anyone has any experience with breakthrough seizures I would love any information that you might have.

Boomer was just recently diagnosed with Epilepsy...so I can feel your concern..

I do hope its just a matter of change with the neuter and the recent loss. Wishing you and Cuinn well.

I hope that Cuin can find something to help him soon! Seziures are really scary, my Sher had them too. I noticed that some foods seem to help his seziures and some made them worse (so far Kirkland and NutraNuggets Adult Performance seem to keep him from having any). Would this be an option in your case?

Cuinn is on a raw organic diet... so we don't feed any kibble at all.... thanks for all the good thoughts.... we have upped his phenobarb by 50mg and he has not had another seizure yet today..... I do keep emergency meds on hand in case a seizure runs to long.... we went to the vet and had a blood test to check pheno levels and make sure they are in the therapeutic range so we shall see.
keeping my fingers crossed.

What does the vet think the seizures are caused from? Has Cuinn had a full blood series? I know how distressing they are to watch. My Lab had them a lot in her last year. Please keep us posted. I'm so sorry about this. I'm keeping her and you in my thoughts.

He started having the seizures about a year and a half ago... Shalva was just a wee puppy..... a week or so old..... idiopathic in nature..... we have done full blood panels several times.... and we have done courses of antibiotics in case it was encephalitis.... this is the first time we hve had breakthrough seizures..... we could do an MRI but really what for? if he has a brain tumour then we aren't doing surgery for a brain tumour and we would work on just controlling the symptoms.... although my vet doubts its a tumour.... if its a brain abnormality then we would really continue to treat the way that we are already.... so didn't see much point in doing the MRI For $1500 bucks.... when there is nothing that would really change anyway. Vet who I adore and trust implicitly states that most of the time with seizures like cuinns you will never know what is causing them... .the only thing we can think of is his neuter which was 3 weeks ago... they say it takes 3 weeks for the hormones to get out of a dogs system after a neuter 3-4 weeks.... so we are thinking that his body chemistry could be changing a bit and that might be setting him off... Cuinn has always had a hormonal aspect to his seizures.... in that every seizure he has had has been when one of my girls has been in season.... my vet has said its not connected but it has been an observation of ours.....I would think that anything could trigger a seizure..... in people that is the case I can't imagine its different in dogs.... so I would imagine the stress in the house from losing our kitty on new years eve and then the neuter changing his body chemistry a bit.... but we just don't know....

What is meant by breakthrough? Anyways, I do hope this passes...poor baby. And I know you must be worried. My Lab's seizures were thought to be caused by her failing liver. She was almost 14 yrs. old when this started happening.

Well, I send you my very best wishes that this will settle down. My thoughts are with you.

a breakthrough seizure is a dog that was otherwise completely controlled on medication seizing despite being on the same medication that has always controlled the seizures......

a dog having seizures that is not on medication is different than a dog that is one meds and fine and then all of a sudden having a seizure despite medication.....

Cuinn is only 4.... he started seizing at a little over age 2..... interesting is that I read something that discussed dogs that will have seizures due to vaccination reactions will start seizing between the ages of 2 and 3.... so for what its worth.... who knows.

I'm so very sorry Shalva, somehow I missed this thread yesterday and I didn't see it until now.

I do so hope that things settle back down for Cuninn. Hopefully it isn't anything other than the changes from the neutering and will quickly go back to how things were before. My thoughts and prayers are with you!
