Sounds gross... but a few questions about vomit
I guess this kinda concerns me because it's been quite a looong time since Gizmo has thrown up anything.
What does it mean when they vomit? Before when he was really small he'd throw up a little bit of bile, and that went away on its' own. Today we were outside and he was able to get to his poop before I did (it's hit or miss... have tried the canned pumpkin but it doesn't seem to help as much) and he ate his poop. When we were outside again, he peed & pooped outside (yay!) and gave him a small piece of hotdog as a reward. I've given it to him before and it has never bothered him. However he just vomitted and it's a mixture of the poop and the weiner... I can't imagine that eating poop is healthy for the dog, considernig it's full of bacteria... any ideas other than feeding canned pumpkin to help out? And what of the vomit? I'm thinking that it just upset his tummy and that he'll be okay now that it's out, or is it a symptom of something more? Just curious. |

I wouldn't worry too much yet. If your dog isn't acting tired and just not themselves, and seems to be normal in every other aspect and it isn't a regular occurance, its most likely nothing. Dogs can be sick and not show any signs really that we can tell, so for piece of mind you could take it to the vet for a check of temp and things. Dogs have eaten poop forever. Some like it more than others unfortunately, and as gross at it seems to us, i'm sure its pretty safe and normal for dogs. I luckily do NOT have a poop consumer----anymore.

He's a tad bit calmer than his normal bag of beans self, but I brought him outside and he chased the snowballs I made for him with his usual gusto, and stalking the cats with his normal vigor.... so I'm hoping it was just an unsettled stomach.
So it's not overly bad if they eat the poop? I try to distract him with praise/treat after he poops outside, trying to get away from him eating it. lol! |

it's probably grosser for you than it is dangerous for them, especially if it's their own poop. if they eat the poop of other animals they can pick up worms/parasites.
they make stuff called forbid that you sprinkle on their food that makes their poop taste bad (like it doesn't already??) mushroom threw up cat poop on my livingroom carpet once. i've cleaned up a lot of gross things but that was absolutely the WORST. |

Ask your vet, the vets here sell something that you sprinkle on their food which they can't taste, then if they eat their poop though, this stuff makes their tounge numb or something and they won't eat it anymore. so they can only taste it after it comes back out.

Sorry , I know you probably didn't mean it to be funny...but it was.Yup! I sometimes wonder if dogs do indeed have taste buds...especially when they consume poopsicles Yuck! That's probably what made him throw up...poor little guy, but if it makes him sick often enought maybe he will quit. Here's hoping. |

LOL Elegy, you crack me up!
Well all I thought was fine, took him out after being crated while I was at work, and he kept trying to strain to poop, but couldn't. After investigating his butt, It seemed like some poop was caught in his fur... possibly blocking him from pooping? Cleaned it off (nothing spells out LOVE like pulling little turds from your dog's butt!) and am now hoping that that will help him poop. Gave him some canned pumpkin for good measure as well. Hoping that is all that is... lol amazing how I could care less if soemthing happens to me... but my dog? OMG I'm a basketcase! |

canned pumpkin?? you can tell I live in the outback lol
is this especially for dogs? Why i ask is the salt content could be rather high if its for humans. Also I wanted to offer a little hint I do if my girls vomit. I give them an 1/8 of a teaspoon of calcium ascorbate powder ( vitamin c) It really helps settle their stomach. As for the poop bit.. well I think we probably all deserve bravery awards lol I have cleaned up some gross backsides on my dogs. Put me near a dirty baby nappy and I heave for hours ![]() |
