Broken jaw from vet :(
I had a most disturbing phonecall earlier.
My friend rang about her old pug Toby he is 11. She took him to a new vet who checked him out and said he had a growth in the bowel and needed some teeth out. The part that distressed me is apparently while the vet was trying to pull a tooth she broke the dogs jaw So now he has been castrated, had his teeth pulled and his jaw wired. I have never heard of a jaw being broken due to having a tooth out but she says it is common with pugs as they have week jawbone is this a furfy???? |

Oh my gods!
That's awful. I don't know if it's common or not, but it's certainly shocking. Poor pup. Cass. |

Its not uncommon, teeth are stubborn little blighters and sometimes even the most competant vet can crack something trying to get one out. It sounds unpleasant but its not really anything the vet did horribly wrong, an unfortunate accident.

When Kassie was younger she had retained her deciduous teeth. She looked like Jaws with all her double teeth in her mouth, poor girl. My vet was going to extract them during her spay but opted not to for that exact reason. He felt the baby teeth were set in her jaw pretty tight and didn't want to risk breaking her jaw. "First do know harm" is his motto. He preferred a dental specialist for dogs to work on them. So I guess it's probably common. I can imagine how awful your friend and her dog must feel. Poor little fellah!

I'm on a few pug forums. Having teeth pulled is quite common, always someone posting about a pug having to have a teeth pulled, especially the folks with the rescues. BUT I have NEVER heard of someones pug having their jaw broke in the process. That is awful... that poor pug.

I have never heard of it either, but when I think about it makes sense. When I had my wisdom teeth out the dr almost broke my jaw in the process because my tooth roots wrap around my jaw bone. The only way he didn't break it was to have his assistant push up on my jaw as he was pushing down. So I would think that if a tooth is esp hard to get out, the result might be a broken jaw. Still, the dr should have realized that when the tooth didn't come right out and taken the proper precautions.

Poor guy! I haven't heard of that happening before but I can imagine it. The one thing that came to my mind is that perhaps his age was a contributing factor - maybe his bones had gotten more brittle and that was the main reason it happened.
Sure hope he's feeling better soon. |

I had my own jaw broken when a wisdom tooth was removed and can sympathize with the poor little guy. Not a fun experience thats for sure.
![]() I think even under the best of circumstances there is always a chance of something like this happening, it doesn't happen often but it can happen. |

I had my jaw broken and dislocated during my wisdom teeth too. No wonder I have a fear of dentist!!!!! I think it happens sometimes with pets too. It might depend on how old the dog is, bone density, and how strong the muscles are around the jaw...etc.
