our dog keeps vomiting

Just a year ago we got a very cute old english sheepdog from Florida and since just about 2 weeks ago, she has been vomiting a lot lately. She tends to do it during the morning before I go to school and late at night when we feed her. We did change her food and for some reason it didn't help at all. When she does get sick it tends to come out small and the coloring is like a pale white-ish yellow. My dad said that some of the times that she has vomited were after she had a sip of water but I wouldn't think it would be the water seeing as how, we've had her for a year, and she's been drinking the same water since we got her and this just started happening 2 weeks ago. After she does get sick, her stomach makes really loud gurgling noises like as if she's hungry. My parents and I don't know what the problem could be and I did read something about how if dog's eat wood then that could cause stomach aches. She has eaten wood before by accident, the wood is called "apple wood" but I'm not sure if that is really the problem at all. She was in heat for about a week (last week) and I'm not sure if even that could contribute to it either. If anyone could help then I'd be very grateful!

This does sound serious and I'd definately take her to the Vet. for tests. If she did indeed eat any wood she could have a piece stuck in her throat, stomach or intestines, and that would cause her to vomit for sure. Please update us on her condition. I do hope everything turns out ok.

Yeah, definately take her to the vet.

Congrats on the (kinda) new dog. I had an Old English Sheepdog, growing up. They're an amazing breed. I hope you'll share some photos of her with us.

First of all welcome to GP ! And secondly WHY hasn't she gone to the vet like days ago. If my dog was throwing up after a day and a half I would have called the vet and taken him in never mind waiting two weeks. Do you not have the financial funds to take her to be checked out? Another thing that worries me is she is not spayed or fixed and she could get pyometra which is a serious infection of the uterous( not sure if I spelled that right) . I would call the vet and bring her in ASAP! Good luck and keep us updated.

Call your vet and make and appointment. She needs to be seen by a vet and we cannot offer that kind of medical advice to determine what is going on. So many things can be causing her to throw up.

If she was in heat last week, she is probably still in heat. Females are in heat for about 3 weeks. The second week is when there is less spotting. Keep her indoors and supervise her while outside. A male dog will do anything to get to a female in heat.. even if that means mating through a chain link fence!

Hope your girl is okay. Best wishes!

Please take her to the vet, this could be really serious and since we can't see her, we don't know. The vet needs to check her out.

Also, as mentioned above, dogs go in heat for three weeks at a time so she could still get pregnant which would be horrible, so keep her in the house.

thank you!

Thank you everyone for your adivce and concerns!!

Right after I wrote this, I went and told my parents that we should bring the dog to the vet. My mom was going to schedule an appointment right after she fed the dog so I was very happy that we were going to take her. My mom figured she'd might as well give the dog a little bit of rice for her stomach for dinner and after she had eaten everything, she never got sick! She hasn't gotten sick all week! She eats normal now, and she's just as happy as she was before she even got sick. Possibly just giving her that little bit of rice could have helped her stomach problems. My parents and I are extremly relieved and we are very sure that if she starts that up again we will take her to the vet ASAP.

Thanks again everyone for the advice!!!! We really appreciate it!

I'm glad she is okay, but I'm confused did you take her to the vet to be checked even though she stopped throwing up? And how come you haven't spayed your dog? Do your parents not want to fix her for a reason. You should really try to convince them to spaying her for lots of different health reasons and to prevent her from getting mammory cancers and pyometra

Well she hasn't turned a year old yet so my parents are still waiting to be able to spay her. When she does turn 1 though, we are going to take her to the vet..

So basically they believe in waiting till a dog is a year old to spay then, okay. But why are they waiting till she is a year old to go to the vet? Has she ever even been to the vet before?

She has been to the vet before many times for check-ups and what not. If my parents never brought her to the vet, even for the simplist thing as a check up I would be very worried about my parents knowledge of dogs. Even though she's not a year old yet...my parents still bring her to the vet. It's just that they are waiting until she's a year old to be spayed not to bring her to the vet.

sammi used to throw up yellowish stuff too - i took her to the vet and they told me that it was bile because her stomach was too empty... she said to give sammi a biscuit before going to bed to calm her stomach down... but DO NOT rely on my comment - take her to the vet and make sure. just letting you know that it happened to sammi too...

hope things go well...
