Congratulations on the switch, I'm glad your dogs loved it!

My second dog, Panna, was on Science Diet when we got her, and had been for a couple years. There was an incredible difference when I switched her to Innova EVO.

Good luck!

Bad news...my dad says we have to switch back to Science Diet except for on the weekends, because my vet recommends it

Aw, that's too bad.

Have you tried showing him links that explain how much better Chicken Soup is than Science Diet? Will he even try it to see the difference in your dog?

I know that before my dad was skeptical about premium foods and wasn't very happy about spending more money on the same amount of dog food. However, after he saw the change in my dogs, he never complained again. Now he even tells everyone how much better the dogs look!

Maybe if you show him what all of the ingredients really are, and show him what makes a premium dog food? Why will he let you feed Chicken Soup of weekends?

Well. vets recommend science diet for several reasons. First off vets get money from science diet, second Hills, the manufacturer sponsors several of the seminars vets go to, third, Hills sponsors the nutrician class at most vet schools.

Science Diet is not a good food, Chicken soup is way better. My dog is on chicken soup as well.

I'm afraid that if I show him any more links or info on how good Chicken Soup is, he'll go berserk, because he's already frustrated with me for pestering him about switching foods. I really hope the vet will change his mind.

Well, my mom was also hesitant to switch to Chicken Soup just because of the price, but I'm so glad we did! The dogs' coats are so shiny now (when they aren't dirty and in need of a bath), and they just seem so much healthier now. More energy, much better coat, and not so loose poop.
That, and getting the food introduced us to a wonderful little store called Buckle's Feed depot and they have super knowledgable staff, they take wonderfully good care of their animals (just rodents, birds, reptiles and the like) and if we had never switched dog foods, I wouldn't have Casey right now! Because they also house Ferrets and they take such good care of them...I would never hesitate to buy from them ever. Their products are cheap and of good qaulity, and that was the store we also bought our dog crate from saving us big bucks! So change your dog's dog food, it might just change a lot of stuff! lol

Actually, it may not be good to just feed that to them on the weekends...because frequently changing a dog's food can cause an upset stomach, can't it?

I would try to explain to your dad about the vets. Tell him about the nutrition education they get(or lack of) and how they are profiting from the sells they make. And then remind him what poor quality is, and whip out those gross ingredients. Explain to him what they are, ask him if HE'D like to eat it!

Listen don’t give up but be nice about it and show some respect(I’m not you don’t already) Your parents probably work hard for the money they have and have a hard time justifying anything more than SD.

Strategy #1
First off don't be a smart *** about it(I know I would be) but ask him NICELY if he would be ok feeding you McDonalds and White Castle 3x a day, then tell him you feel the same way about the dog as he does about you.

Strategy #2
As far as the cost goes tell your parents if they are willing to pay for the Science Diet then you'll get a weekend job or do chores for the neighbors to make up the difference in price(were talking a few dollars a week here), if you tell them(as in the people you do chores for) why your tryingt o make extra money I bet they would be more than willing to help you out, I know I would.

After awhile your parents might just see how important it is to you and just pick up the difference letting you keep the extra money you worked for.

Going about it this way will not only get your puppy some better food but will also earn the respect of your neighbers and your parents as they see you are willing to o what it takes to make life better for your dog, this is a very unselfish act worth following through on.

So GOOD LUCK!

PS....When you talk to the neighbers\weekend work poeple don't say Science Diet is cr@p or anything bad about cheap dog food(Incase they feed their dogs cheap food and think it's OK)

Just tell them you have a dog that has a hard time digesting carbs, wheats ect ect and need to pay a little extra for the "Protien\meat" based dog food that are available so you guys can be happy together.

The trick is to focus on the positive and stay away from the negative, like Isaid you can do it and good luck.

I tried again just last night. I researched 10 sheets of paper on why Chicken Soup is better, at my dad's request. He has looked at them and e-mailed one of the site's owners. We're waiting for a response. Thank you all for your advice and I hope all goes well.
