something weird going on with my dog

well my bog luc has been acting strange, as of about the last 48 hours he can't stay still, i mean before he would lay down and sleep most of the day but now he is agitated and moving around constantly, i don't know why, may its becasue i just started changing him to canidae, and i found out that my dad gave him 2 scoop fulls of the new food instead of using the mixed stuff i made of his old, food now he is having a harder time going to the bathroom, than his normal schedule. other then that he is not doing much of anything weird, couldn it be cramps or something like that from being switched over the the new stuff too fast?

Anything is possible. If the dogs appears uncomfortable, pacing, can't seem to even lay in a comfortable position he should be seen by a vet. We'd have no way of knowing if the extra food / food switch has anything do to with whats currently going on but your boy sounds like he may be in some pain and that shouldn't wait.

Please let us know what the vet has to say.

well he can lay down if he wants too, and i touched his abdomen and everything and he is in no pain, he is just agitated like if we get too much caffeine or sugar, i will keep and eye on him, and if by tomorrow morning he is still doing weird things i guess I'll take him to the vet.

Be careful. Bloat is always a serious fear of mine....life threatening. I hope he'll be OK. Let us know.

I stand by what I said before, this isn't normal behavior and when it's enough to where your noticing it then the dog isn't comfortable. Dogs can also act this way during the beginning phase of bloat. Good luck and I hope your dog will be ok.

well i just talked to my dad again and he said he is more calm, he was really agitated when we were eating but i think that was because we were eating, he said he laid down and ate some food, drank some water and is just relaxing now. in the vet book that i have it says the early signs are pacing, restlessness, salivation, retching, unproductive attempts to vomit, and enlargement of the abdomen. he is not doing any of these things, only the restlessness. I'll keep and eye on him and if need be we have a 24 hour university vet hospital around here.

A dog in the first stages of bloat as well as all the way through does not always show any or all of the signs listed in books. The last dog my trainer had die of bloat showed no signs at all other than being a bit restless. At any rate, I've said my peace and I hope you'll let us know how the dog does.

hey that's fine, I'll keep an eye on him like i said, also we don't have the money to take him to the vet every time something weird pops up, especially something as broad as restlessness. i mean i don't go to the doc every time i don't feel good, and i guess if its his time to go because of something then i guess its his time to go just like i could go right now. i took another look at him and he is laying down sleeping in the living room, so i don't think its anything major. I'll let you guys know tomorrow how he is doing. he has been lucky that he has lived this long he has bad seizures and the vet told us that if he was no on his meds he would have died of exhaustion, most people would not have kept him and deal with his problems and we did.

It would cost a WHOLE lot more to take him to the Emergency vet and have them say its too late, than it would to take him to the vet for an exam. I can't even remember the last time I went to the doctor, but everytime I see something wrong with my dog he's at the vet. He is like a child to me.

well around here its 47 for the emergency and 33 for my regular vet, so its no big deal and also he is doing fine today nothing wrong with him, we just played for about 10 minutes till i got tired of it, and he slept fine through the whole night and no problems this morning. and to me hes not a child hes a dog, sorry that i don't put as much of an importance as some of you do but to me hes still a dog and other things come first, unless its life threatening or if he is showing more symptoms then just being agitated i like to wait it out and see what happens, the dog body fights for life just like the human body so its not like he will drop dead with out at least some warning signs.

well i finally took him to the vet, he started doing it again, in order of importance, he does not have bloat, and nothing going on with heart or lungs. he thinks its form his new food Canidae, he said it has to do with him being on the phenobarbital he said his liver might not have the capacity to digest all of the protein and its turning into ammonia in his blood, that is going to his brain and causing him to be like that, also he said it might have to do with it not having the corn, its used as a filler and it might make him feel hungry all of the time. well eh took blood and we'll see what the results are, also his eye thing is just an infected tear gland and its nothing to worry about only if it gets big enough to bother his eye then we can remove it he said it might even pop and then it will drain normally. all of this cost $160 my pocket book hurts.

Not trying to lead this way of topic here but I found it funny that you said this. Wish my Cool Dog would have shown some signs before dieing as do I wish Renegade would have. Sorry, I don't agree. Glad your dog is feeling better.

maybe they did but they were subtle, so subtle that if you were not paying attention all the time you would have never caught it.

Looks like we'll have to agree to disagree and press on.
