Check out the thread at the top of this part of the forum, it is chalk full of great foods and how to look for good, healthy ingredients.

I don't think that Royal Canin is a bad food, but I wouldn't recommend it - there are better foods out there and worse foods out there. Personally, if I didn't like some of the ingredients, I wouldn't feed it to my dogs.

My three girls (a Shih tzu X, a Maltese, and a Maltese X) are all on Merrick. I've been extremely happy with it, and their canned food is absolutely amazing - it's better than what I eat! My Maltese X was on Royal Canin before I got her and I've seen a difference since I switched her. My only complaints is that I haven't found customer service to be that great (although I've only had one experience with them) and it's not as readily available as some other foods.

Other foods I like are:
All Natura Foods, such as Innova, Innova EVO, California Natural... (www.naturapet.com)
Solid Gold (www.solidgoldhealth.com)
Timberwolf Organics (www.timberwolforganics.com)
Canidae (www.canidae.com)
etc.

Of course, there isn't any one food that's best for every dog, every dog reacts differently to every food. Good luck!

Since reading the great thread on this site about dog food I switched to Canidae and also mix the dry Canidae with Merrick wet. They LOVE it!!! I free fed before this and now I feed in the morning. They have never reminded me to feed them. Now they WILL NOT let me forget it. It is so funny. I have seen a huge difference in my 13-year-old pom/yorkie mix's attitude toward life. She is acting like a puppy again and my pit mix is doing much better with her skin and shedding. I cannot say enough about these two foods. They are right when they say Merrick's canned is better than what we eat. It is like foo-foo dinner in a can.

If your going to go with Royal Canin feed the "Sensible Choice" it's RC top of the line food kinda the whole Holisstic deal 1 meat and no preservitives or corn. I feed the lamb and rice because my guy doens't do all that well with Chicken for swhatever reason.

It's a good food and it's available everywhere, I may switch to Innuvo(sp?!) because I found a place local that sells it today but I'll keep him on this for awile and see how well he does.
