Worms In Other Dogs
I go to a friends house every weekend (or most) to see my horse (he is an hour away and I do not have a car just yet). There are times when I want to bring my dog, because she would be able to play with other dogs and be outside alot. She is an only dog (5 years old now), as I am be going to college in 2 years. When my dad brings her to pick me up, she is fine with the dogs. A little scared (always been shy of other dogs), but is getting much better and used to them.
Anyways, back to the topic ![]() So my friend has 4 dogs, and the littlest dog (Sparkle) is one I cannot stand. Just this weekend, she had worms and when we asked her when was the last time she gave her dog heartworm medicine, she said it was 3 months ago. I am not sure if she went out to get the medicine or not (I actually don't know what she did. But we did tell her that she needs to go to the vet). I gave my dog Heartgard on the 21st of January, so would my dog be okay if Sparkle had not been checked? I am not saying she has or hasn't, but just incase. THANKS!! |

What kind of worms does your friends dog have? Not Heartworm I hope. Dogs can catch worms from others, hook worms, whip worms, round worms. My pup just had round worms and he either got it at the dog park by sniffing other dogs poop or from eating horse or goose poop but either way or whatever way he got them. I went to the vet and got dewormer for him. So to answer your question dogs can get them from other dogs and are contagious so I would keep your dog away from hers. Better safe than sorry
Also if one of her dogs has worms than all of them would have them to, so maybe you should inform her of that . |

We don't know what kind of worms. We tried looking them up, but we couldn't find a picture that really showed us what she was looking for. Sorry, I didn't really want to look at it
![]() How long does it normally take for worms to go away? The sad part is, this isn't the first time her dog has gotten worms, that I know of. Her dogs also eat horse poop (unlimited supply lol). THANKS! I agree, much rather be safe than sorry, which is why I asked ![]() |

Karrie, after the first deworming treatment it would usually be repeated again in three more weeks. I have been going to my vet for over 20 years so I called them up brought down a fecal sample and they gave me strongid which is the dewormer after I finish the second dose I need to take down another fecal sample to make sure they are gone. Your friends dogs can get very sick if they have worms and are not being treated. Please explain that to her even if you can't stand the wormy little dog

Also Karrie one more thing, if your dog has been around your friends dogs then I would take a fecal sample to your vet to make sure your dog is clean of worms. I'm sure you can just call and ask them if they can give her poop a check and you don't have to bring your dog in either
my vet charges $22 for a fecal check but it sure beats the cost of a check-up! ![]() |

That is a good idea. I also go down their with Karrie, and bring my dog with me. My dog should have gotten her heartworm a couple of days ago, but we have run out, so are going to the vets tomarrow. I will make sure to bring a fecal sample!
THanks for the advice! **On a good note, we are making progress with our friend! We finally told her that Kibbles n' bits was not a good food to feed her dogs and we also were able to give her advice with her dog and her agression problem! Woo Hoo! (We couldn't stand it anymore, well I couldn't at least) |

THANKS!! I have to go by the vets office sometime this week (need to go to a store next door). My dog wasn't around the wormy dog very long (maybe 10 minutes), but still worth getting checked out.
I also read that humans can get worms too. But can we get it from the dog? I haven't really touched the wormy dog (can't stand her), and when we found out she had worms, I stayed far away from her. |

Yes, we can get worms from dogs so don't even let your dog lick your face or mouth area until you get her checked for worms. And 10 minutes is long enough to be around the wormy dog. Can I ask why you can't stand the poor worm dog?

I can answer that question. She is a JRT and she has a major agression problem(it is her owners fault tho).
If she is sitting down by a human, and another dog walks by she will growl and snap at them. Our friend would always tell her, "It's okay sparkle...blah, blah, blah" and it would drive me CRAZY!(this is what we helped her with, we told her that she actually had to say no, or she was encouraging it) Another problem is that she is the most dominant one in the house, including the humans. From there you probobly know where we are coming from! lol I am about 99% sure that I am more dominant than she is, as she treats me differently than her mom and dad and if she treat everyone like she treats us, she WOULD be a good dog(ie, laying at my feet instead of all up in my face). Basically, our problem is with her training and not the dog herself. If she was trained properly, she could be a very good dog. (She is also just a very in-your-face type of dog, but that can just come form being the most dominant all the time.)Hope that clears things up! SAM |

Shouldn't matter how long your dog was around the other. Still taking a fecal sample to the vet is going to be your best option. It's horrible when dogs become infested with worms. I had a rottie who was so badly infested, that she pooped out the adult worm. This worm was over a foot long and about a 1/2 inch - 1 inch wide. The people I got her from never had any shots for her, nor any preventatives. She was so skinny.
Eeek, that's why I really don't care for JRT. No offense to anyone, but any that I have been around or seen, are extremely snippy and don't like strangers. There has only been one time I was around 7 JRT's that were soooo sweet. They had done a wonderful job training them. I know I can't spoil a whole bunch with just a couple experiences. But glad you are getting through to her. Did you reccommend a better food for her dogs? You ought to find a list and print it out for her. And also find a website that has the NILIF program for her JRT. |

Yup. She is one of the few JRTs that I know that doesn't bark (though, she has started to do bark more than usual, but it still wouldn't be alot). I just don't like the dog in general. Neither her personality or training help, as I am not into the dogs that want to be in your face. Heck, I can't stand horses that are like that either! My dog can be in your face, but she knows that when I tell her no or stop, that I am serious and she just goes to sleep
![]() I told my dad, but he said he does not know when he can get off work, so this just plain sucks. If I had a car, I would have been there days ago. Hopefully my dad can get off of work soon, so we can get her checked. And the ONLY way for a human to get worms from a dog is if the dog LICKS the FACE, correct? Want to make sure. My dog doesn't give kisses that much, except maybe here and there. And when she does, it is on the hand ![]() |

I went to the vets today with my dog, and the vet said that I shouldn't worry about it because there is no way the eggs of the worms can hatch that fast, and if I keep giving her her heartworm meds (I gave her it today), that she should be fine. We also went for some other things, but that is besides the point(spaying stuff).
BUT, I am still worried that I might have worms. I am pretty sure that the JRT could have given it to me, because I was "exposed" to her. How will I know that I have them, and if I do, what can I do about it? Quote:
