A couple of issues

Alright, I hope that this is the right place to post this.

My Beagle Maggie has been doing a couple of things that have me not so much worried, as perplexed. First, off and on for the last 1-2 months she has been biting at this one particular spot right next to her tail. Sometimes during the day she does it enough to remove her coat in that spot. We took her to the vet the first time she did it and they ran some skin tests and everything was fine. SO, I am not sure what else it could be. I have her on Natural Balance Duck and Potatoe becuase I thought it might be something with her food, but I guess that wasn't it because she is still doing it.

The second thing is that she is drinking a ton of water for her size, and she is peeing a lot. She was doing really really well at not having an accidents inside, but the last 2 days she has done it abour 4 times. Also when she is home during the day she completely soaks her pee pad which is something that she never used to do. I DON"T KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON>

please give me some ideas on what I should do.

I'd look into checking her over for fleas and testing for possilble worms for the chewing bit if skin problems have been ruled out. Being so close to the tail, worms could be possible. Could also be an insect bite that was just itchy, and she irritated it in the beginning, and because she keeps chewing the spot it's still bugging her. For now to stop her chewing it until you get it checked, you could get some of that bitter spray, might keep her from going at it. If it looks like an open sore don't though, it would give her a good sting. The excessive drinking and peeing I am not sure of, she may be sick, best to take her to the vet and have her checked for both problems.

Sometimes they chew themselves if they are in pain. I would take her in for blood work-up.

I called the vet as I was posting this also. She said that the excessive drinking could be due to a UTI. We are going to have to get a urine sample and have it tested. She also recommended that we try using benadryl for the spot that she keeps biting.

Good that you called your vet. A UTI will cause excessive drinking and urination. I do believe thryroid can cause excessive drinking and skin problems... that might be an avenue to go down if things don't straighten out soon. The thyroid test needs to be the OFA thyroid test. The basic ones that the vets routinely do do not cover all the factors that need to be covered. For more information on the OFA thyroid test, visit http://www.offa.org/thygrade.html.

Diabetes can cause all of those symptoms also, espcially the excessive drinking! Alot of types of diabetes are easy to manage tho, so no worries.

Took the sample to the vet this morning and just received a call from them informing me that she does have a UTI. SO I am going to be picking up the medication after work and we will have to see that it at leasts helps with the drinking and the peeing.

Glad you found out and hopefully that will take care of it.

I've been watching this post and I'm sure glad the vet found the problem. Hope Maggie is back to herself in no time!
