update on luc

well i have another thread below but i though i should star a new one, ok well just got him back from msu and they could not find a thing wrong with him, they think the problem lies in his cerebrum but i have to drive 75miles to see an animal neurologist, he has to get an mri done, i don't know what we will do if they can't find anything wrong, maybe we can treat the symptoms with drugs or i might just have to let him go. it suck that one day he just snapped like that. well wish me luck and I'll keep you guys up to date, I'll talk to the neurologists tomorrow wand let you guys know what they say.

I hope you find out what the problem is and can make him better.
I do wish you luck.
I have to say that letting a dog go should only be because it is best for the dog.. no other reason.
Be sure to let us know how he goes

I wish you the very best of luck and hope that the MRI is able to find something. Thank you for keeping us updated and I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers that this all turns out ok.

What type of dog do you have? I missed your other thread, so not sure what has happened. I do know that there is a disease, cannot think of the name off the top of my head. I think it typically accurs in dobermans, where their brains grow faster than the skull, causing pressure and very bad behavior issues. I am saying this because you mentioned the word "snapped" in your post. I have a freind who had one of the best dogs I have ever seen and then she started to exhibit "strange" behavior. They attributed it to growing pains, and puppyhood. (After trips to the vet with no result). Then one day her baby woke up from a nap, proceeded to lunge at my freind on the couch and attack her. So badly that her husband had to pull the dog off and throw him in the basement, but not after loosing a finger on him, and my friend had to have her ear re-attached and 40+ stiches in her face.
All this from this cranial disorder, I hope this is not what is wrong with your dog. Please let us know how the MRI went. I wish I could rememeber what it is called.

Is it possible he ate something he should not have, and now has a partial blockage that is causing him discomfort?

My sister's dog ate a bunch of paper and had a partial blockage. The symptoms sound similar.

You mentioned him drinking ok, but is he eating? Is he keeping it down? Is he snapping or nippy when you handle him?

well first its a mixed breed with we think australian shepherd and rottweiler. i don't know if we can get the MRI its 2000-2500 and we can't afford that, we are taking him for a consultation, and see where that gets us, the only thing that changed in his life when this happened is that about 2day prior i started changing him to canidae, i called the company and I'm going to send out a sample so they can test it for anything that might have caused this, i will keep you up to date, and also msu will test the dog food too. he will eat and keep it down but he will only eat wet food he does not want to touch dry food. i think that's what this problem might be from, who knows. i'll keep you guys up to date as info comes in.

edit:by snapped i don't mean aggressive, i mean started acting strange all of a sudden not a gradual thing. he doe snot bit when you handle him or anything, not even a growl.

try boiling some hamburger instead of frying it, or fry it and rinse it well to get the grease off, mix it with some cooked plain white rice. Feed this instead of dog food for a few days. It is very bland for their stomach and sometimes really helps heal things up if there has been a stomach problem.

well he will eat canned dog food just fine but he likes it heated, he will not touch it if its not hot. also he is getting worse, now he can barley get up, he tired to jump onto the couch and took a fall, hes not hurt or anything but he is loosing power in his muscles, and there is nothing we can do for him, his doctor at MSU said he will give me a call tomorrow, and I'll talk to him and see what he says, like i said on Monday we will go to the neurologist, its a 80 mile drive, boy i can't wait. and I'm also going to mail canidae some food for testing. i want some answers, nothing can come on this fast and progress this fast with out being a toxin/virus/bacteria and if i find out that it came from the food they are so screwed.

I know of a dog who had much of the very same things going on and the MRI showed a bulging disc that was pressing directly on the spinal cord. They operated that same day and the dog recovered very well. Not saying this is what's going on but it could be the cause.

update for today he has got most of his strength back in his rear legs and he seems to be settling down he still walks all over the place to the point of him heavily panting but he will sometime slay down and sleep for 1-3 hours and sleeps pretty good through the night. i got him some more canned food, he likes chicken soup and merrick canned food, and actually it looks really good. he is drinking a ton of water but still have not pooped in about 2 days again, he did before he went to the vets Thursday morning, but nothing yet. he is only eating about 2 cans a day but its better than nothing. well i'll update you guys tomorrow night about Sundays events.

update 1/5/06

well he finally pooped last night, and slept through the night fairly well. today he still walked a total of about 5-8 hours, he walks then he sleeps. and walks some more. he will also not eat anything that has liver in it, but he loves the cans from merrick, the salmon, chicken pot pie anything like that and he scarfs it up. well thats it for now, we are getting ready for the trip tomorrow lets see 80 miles with a dog that can't stand still and gets hyperactive on car rides, this is going to be an adventure. i'll let you guys know what the neurologist says tomorrow. well good night.

Is there any way the vet could prescribe a sedative for him for the ride there tomorrow, maybe call it in to your local pharmacy to make it a bit easier on him?

Best of luck tomorrow and I really hope their able to give you some sort of good news.

the neurologist said we should not give him a sedative because we don't want to mask any of the symptoms.
