Common to vomit after nuturing?

I woke up to Gizmo vommiting this morning, it's not a lot of puke, more like a small amount (around the size of a quarter) and it's yellow and frothy. The thing that worried me is that he did it around 4 times in a row, and almost sounded like a cat does when they're trying to cough up a hair ball.

Is this normal? Talk about being woken up with a start!

The after effects of anesthesia would be my guess, that and the fact that the little guy had to go without his usual food schedule would lead to an upset stomach. He's bringing up bile....I'd suggest starting him off slowly with a little boiled hambuger and rice. Small feedings throughout the day rather than in one sitting, not enough to fill him up but just a little to ease his tummy. jmo

I'd also give your vet a call so they can document it in his chart, knowing how he is effected by anesthesia can be very important if he ever needs it again. You can also ask you vet about giving him an antacid.

Thanks for the advice Crossfire. I think it must be that as well, because he never vomits anymore, then when I brought him back yesterday he did a little, then again today. Poor little guy...also, is it common to have bruising along the scrotal area?

Anytime he lays on his back and I can see it I just feel rotten!

Bruising in the scrotum is normal.

When Shay had surgery early this year, he coughed for a couple of days, but didn't bring up bile. I think it may have had something to do with being intubated...

Oh yes, the brusing is normal and as long as there isn't any excessive swelling he's doing fine there.

Yep, that scratchy throat from the tube doesn't help much. I know how you feel but it really is better for him in the long run and he'll be back to his little cute self in no time flat!

Gas is generally the cause of them vomiting. It would help him if you gave him something light to eat like yogurt or cottage cheese and if that doesn't come back up then you could start him on rice and hamburger mixture. Keep us posted on his progress.

A Treacheal Tube is inserted into the throat for the administration of GA gas and oxygen while the dog is knocked out.

Often, this poses no significant problems, but sometimes, it causes enough throat irritation to simulate a harsh, treacheal infection, hence the dry-ish sounding, harsh trying-to-bring-something-up type of coughing sounds.

Besides the usual nausea and associated side-effects of a GA, it might be a good idea to get the throat checked if there are any sings of difficulties swallowing, breathing or pain around the throat/neck area upon very gentle palpation.

Yep this can cause a raspy sound and irritation. Your right. Especially if the larynx is high and forward. Also if they have a larger than normal toungue. Anesthesia, is the culpret of the nausea.

Well he seems to be doing better. I left a message for my vet to let him know that it's possible taht Gizmo might not react well to being put under. He hasn't vomitted since, but I've really been watching him like a hawk so that he doesn't get overly excited.

The swelling looks like it's starting to go down as well, thank heavens. Poor little guy! If only there was a way I could dog-speak to him and let him know that this is for the best!

Nice to see things are starting to ease a bit for him! Poor little pup...he's got a good mom taking care of him so he will be just fine.
It is tough, isn't it , to keep them quiet, oh! well if he has energy that's a good sign!
Take care, give Gizmo a big hug!

Tiffany Shih Tzus are well known for this to happen to them. It happens when their little tummies are empty, my Charlie does it every now and then. It is usually nothing to worry about to stop it i just Charlie a little treat before bed time to line his tummy through the night but on ocassion it still happens. he usually does it twice and then no more and its the same yellow frthy bile stuff. I know loads of Tzu owners who have exactly the same thing.
If you think about it, he would have been pretty hungry after the surgery as they cant eat for a while before hand and afterwards.
Hope Gizmo is feeling better

Just an after thought kinda thing. I got Charlie neutered a couple of weeks ago and after a day or so he was fine and dandy. Not best pleased with the collar he had to wear but his usual nutcase self so i am sure after a couple of days Gizmo will be just fine. I keep saying im going back the vet to get Charlies back lol he has been a nut job (no pun intended) since he got them taken away, almost as if it was a wieght of his mind lol.

LOL!!!!! lmao I literally LOL'd reading that. Hilarious! Today he's starting to seem like his perky and peppy self again. I've been controlling him going into the snow, wanted to wait until he had a good 5 days or so of healing before he can go ape-wild outside.

The swelling is going down as well too. Thank heavens! My brother kept teasing him, saying that Gizmo has lost his "gizmo" lol. Nice!
