Ever heard of this crazy solution for worms?

*******PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME********

I was volunteering at the dog rescue on Sat and a couple brought in a 7 week old rottweiler puppy they had just bought out of the back of some lady's station wagon.. (can you say puppy miller?!?!?!?).

The lady told them to worm the puppy by giving it some chewing tobacco and spam, and that would take care of the worms.?!?!?!?! Has anyone heard of this before? I about died, and told the nice people not to do that, and they visited with the vet instead.

Anyway all of the puppies in the car were just crawling with fleas, and the people were upset so as soon as they bought the puppy they came straight over to see the vet, and got a flea dip as well.

I talked to them as they were leaving and they felt bad that they had gotten this puppy and it was so sick and was already costing them a ton, but they were really nice and were willing to do whatever needed to be done to get it healthy.

Anyway, just wondered if anyone had heard of this worming method before...just another miller trying to save on money and doing strange things to their dogs.

Never heard of it... EVER!

People will say anything so that it sounds like anything that is wrong is the simplest thing in the world to cure... but, of course, if it was, wouldn't they have already cured it??

OH BOY, and fleas to boot...

What do you tell a couple that had just taken in a puppy like this and already seeing they made a mistake? Can you tell them to take it back? Do you take it to the shelter? Do you take lifetime responsibility for your impulse buy? Such a difficult situation... And the $50 they paid will only be a drop in the bucket for the dog's future care...

I vaguely remember hearing of cowboys using tobacco to worm their horses a long time ago?

NO, never heard of it either. Just another reason NOT to buy from a BYB, especailly someone selling them from the back of their car!! OMG, hopefully this is a mistake these owners will learn from. It is just like pet stores, I'm sure these dogs get taken simply out of people feeling sorry for them or others who aren't willing to pay a lot for a dog. I'd hate to think what would happen to these poor animals if no-one did buy them, but at least it may prevent BYB's for breeding them. Makes me wonder if they are selling them from the back of a car. Is it just them thinking they'll get more people to see them, or that they were living in such filth that they didn't want them seen at their home. All we can really do is EDUCATE, EDUCATE, EDUCATE on the bad practices BYB's have. But there will always be ignorant people who don't listen to what you have to say and go ahead anyway, so sad.

Lol but did it work

Sounds rather a crazy thing to me and what is spam???? If its like a tinned ham mess I should imagine it would be terrible for a puppys digestion.

Poor little pup I am glad he has a good family now though

I don't want to try to understand the mind of a bybr or a puppymiller but I would assume the spam would be to hide the tobacco in to make the dogs eat it?

I've heard of it - but its an old wives tale, totally outdated with the arrival of anthelmintics.
