Update on Shadow - kinda good news

Shadow has been having a few problems again...about 7 days ago he developped a staph infection in the groin so away to the vet we went. This time however I asked to see the other partner (lady doc ), after looking my boy over she asked me if I would be willing to pay 100.00$ and have a full thyroid panel done because she felt this could be the root of his problem. Well I jumped at the offer...thinking to myself "why didn't the other guy do the darn test...shadow's been having problems forever."
So we went home and waited...Saturday evening I noticed Shadow had scratched a patch just above his eye and it was bleeding...so i decided to shave off what I could to have a good look ( used my hubby's electric razor ...don't tell him!!!) and found another large lesion. Ugh!! I'm getting to the sort of good news here... well it started bleeding again, so off to the vet we go...again. My *new* vet tells me that my boy is indeed hypothyroid and must be on medication but that she believes treatment of the condition will solve the constant infections as well as the weight gain. So to say the least I am relieved that the problem has finally been found. But Shadow is a bit miffed cause he must wear a lamp shade for a few days to let the lesion can heal. Poor little guy...I'm not too popular with him today.

Well that's my update...I pray that this will be the end to alot of his problems...it's the best 100 bucks I ever spent!
Thanks for sharing with me!!

Oh my gosh, why didn't the other guy ever think of that? Hope this is the problem and nothing else happens to the poor guy.

Hopefully Shadow will be tip-top in no time. I am glad you switched vets as well! Shadow may not be thrilled with you right now, but will be in the long run.

Just wondering , it seems to me I've seen posts of members who have the same problem - hypothyroid- that is and I would like a little more info. on this condition. My vet mentionned that Shadow would have to be on medication twice a day for quite awhile and then another panel should be done to see if the medication is adequate. I would also like to know how much time before I can see changes! I guess the whole thing has finally sunk in and I'm a bit worried. Any advice would be appreciated.

Aw! Poor Shadow. Look how pitiful he is in that picture!

But his mommy is doing the best to help him! Just remember that Shadow

Glad to hear you are figuring things out. I'd hate to have a problem with my dogs and not know what it was coming from.

My last dog Alexi's thyroid quit producing at age two, so she had to take medicine twice a day for 6 years.

Over time I noticed she aged a bit faster, graying of the fur, slowing down a bit, and she lost a bit more hair than normal and was hard to keep from getting over weight.

But truly she lived a good life and I don't think, other than tiring easily, she ever knew she was sick.

I'm glad you found someone who got to the root of the problem and that Shadow can start to get better!

Well Shadow has been on his meds for a little over a week, the sores are healing ( probably because of the antibiotics he was given ). From what I read they say that there should be some improvement within the first week to 10 days...I really haven't seen much of a change...he still sleeps alot , but I guess I just have to be patient. I get the feeling this has been going on for some time, just never picked up.
I am ever hopeful that he will be much better in time and I do appreciate your inquiring about my boy...that was very caring of you. Thank-you.
